I do know that Wentz received quite a bit of Virtual purchasing shotguns for his offensive line in Philadelphia and the fact that he enjoyed hunting too. Also he was a scapegoat in Indianapolis, when the drunken Jim Irsay blamed Wentz for not making the playoffs, but has not been there, since they have moved onto Wentz either.

Ron Rivera was also not very complementary of Wentz from a leadership standpoint, but again, Washington under OC Scott Turner was a mess and they changed OC's the following year. Now, I also realize where there is smoke, there is fire, but I thought Wentz really offered a different dynamic as a backup and was hoping the Rams would keep him and maybe even be the guy after Stafford.

As to Jimmy Garoppolo, he was drafted by those cheating hearts in New England, traded to those dirty bastards in San Francisco and then played for the son of that back stabbing Brutus in Sin City. I will find it very difficult to root for him, porn star references, notwithstanding.
I look at it this way. McVay has had a look at Wentz and I haven’t seen that the Rams were trying to sign him this winter. In a brief stint with Baker Mayfield, McVay wanted him back.

So apparently, McVay prefers Garapolo over Wentz. Or Wentz wouldn’t sign for what the Rams offered, if they offered. Coming off a season where Wentz wasn’t getting any takers, that would be surprising. Garapolo was a starter last year. Would the Rams offer Wentz more than they offered Garapolo?

It seems McVay made the choice.

I agree I do believe McVay likes Garoppolo for whatever reason. I will just have to adjust and not a fan of him missing the first two games for failing the drug test either, but hopefully it will be a good signing.

Was it mentioned in this thread that Rams wanted him in 2022 but then the whiners re-signed him? Knows much of the offense and s/b better than any backup we had, perhaps even over Wentz but we'll see. The Rams obviously thought so.

Strongly rooted against Jimmy starting back in 2017 because the stupid whiner fans were acting like he was the next Montana. (when did they NOT think that ever?? - before 1981)

I mean, Wentz is a huge reason they didn't make the playoffs. They had to win one of two games to make the playoffs and couldn't win either, the last game against the worst team in the league in the Jaguars. Wentz's play in both was bad, and bad earlier in the season too.

From the Indy Star:

Wentz hit rock bottom on Sunday in Jacksonville.

Inaccurate, indecisive and reckless, Wentz completed 17 of 29 passes for 185 yards, took six sacks and made two back-breaking plays that sealed the Colts’ fate.

The first, an ugly fumble in his own territory, stemmed from a problem Wentz has had all season long. For the most part, he’d been able to avoid interceptions, but he’s frequently tried to avoid sacks by shoveling or pitching the ball for plays that have no chance. Wentz tried it again as a Jacksonville rusher came free, got the ball knocked out of his hand for a fumble and gave up a field goal attempt.

The next was the sort of play that hasn’t burned him this season. Wentz tried to force the ball to Mo Alie-Cox instead of flipping it to an open Jonathan Taylor, and tossed his first road interception and gave away any chance the Colts had of coming back.

I'm sure people have been shunned for their politics in the NFL but I don't really know many examples except Kapernick. This doesn't seem like one of them. The guy truly sucks. That being said, he's still better than Rypien.

I’m a Yankee fan. I had to adjust to Wade Boggs and later, Roger Clemens becoming Yankees. I know what you mean.

I just hope Garapolo is the backup all season and not needed to win any games. However, if it did come to that, wouldn’t it be great if he played better for McVay and the Rams, than he did for Shanahan? 49ers fans would be livid. Garapolo and the Rams beating Purdy and the Niners in a regular season game wouldn’t be so bad.

I guess will agree to disagree as I have posted numerous time I liked Wentz more then most, but as to Jimmy Garoppolo, well, I guess I have to get ready to support him and as @Loyal communicated, at least he is Italian.

If a QB is sacked 6 times, one might think their offensive line might not be very good. . . .
Hell, even Stafford looked average at best in 2022 when our Oline was getting him leveled that many times a game.

I don’t think Kapernick was shunned for his politics. He had a lot of baggage and he was not a very good quarterback.

His being a middle of the pack QB when it all went down didn't help. And even when he hadn't played for a bit, he could have been a backup on a number of teams.

Definitely a confluence of things. All that being said, it honestly doesn't matter what your politics are as long as your a winner in this league and that's been born out countless times.

I think what hurt Wentz's reputation most was failing when Frank Reich brought him in and believed in him. Frank's no McVay but he is highly regarded around the league as an offensive mind and play designer. So him feeling the need to actually apologize to Irsay for bringing Wentz in insinuates that some bullshit happened behind the scenes. Like maybe he told Irsay to stick it in his ass or something idk.

Either way after that failure teams were completely uninterested in him until McVay brought him in. And like I mentioned earlier, as much as I enjoyed that win over SF the fact he had to rely on his legs as much as he did turned me off. Best QB fit for this offense is speedy and intelligent ball distribution to the threats, not run threat. So as much as I have always despised Garoppolo I think he is a clear upgrade over Carson.

I wish Carson well though of course. Could have gotten behind him as the QB2 but I think this path is stronger for us.

With Wentz.. it was more of an issue of him holding onto the ball too long.

Yes in another thread. Expressed my concern when he was released.

Wouldn't it be great if we could play the Cards the first 2 games and not even have to worry about the opponents pass rush?

Yeah, Wentz couldn’t get it done with his arm. Without his legs he doesn’t win that game. 138 yards passing against backups isn’t impressive. I’m sure McVay noted his late arrival and simplified the game plan too.

So many people were immediately saying he’d get a starting job this spring based on that one unimpressive performance. What can being a first round top ten QB can get you? An everlasting belief that there is still something there to be tapped into, if they are matched with the right coach. If Wentz was a sixth round pick, then nobody is impressed with that win.

You know the fact that Wentz ran and set a record for rushing yards for a Rams QB since Bob Waterfield actually turned me on, where others, have posted it did not. Guess I feel like Ray Liotta's girlfriend in Goodfellas.

I know there are women, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of there the minute their boyfriend gave them a gun to hide. But I didn't. I got to admit the truth. It turned me on.”

Unfortunately, many of you guys are Just missing the Point; and sadly a few may be afraid to be honest.

When evaluating Wentz vs. Garoppolo vs. other potential back-up-QBs ... Yes, of course experience counts ... as does locker-room leadership. Arm-strength and accuracy are critically important. Athletic ability is a factor.

But Jimmy Garoppolo has one trait that No One else can offer ...

It's that Smile ... YOU know it ... I know it ... Hate it if you must but it's Captivating! Embrace It!

It won't work against all opponents but some defensive players will see that smile before the ball is snapped, and freeze for just a moment. That is all the Rams' offensive talent will need!

It's the Smile Boys!

Yup!

Why... I remember a little animosity back when the Rams had signed OBJ. Remember how we couldn't stand him during that 2014 MNF game vs the Giants and the big scrap?

I cannot help but embrace the G-string.

So, you’re saying you want JG to be the QB of the future?
