tavon austin and brandon cooks are often compared but the two are very different. cooks is a much better wide out but austin is much better after the catch.
-----------
Tavon Austin isn’t better than Brandin Cooks at anything; Austin is a complete bust. Austin and Cooks are about the same size; Cooks has a 68% career catch rate, at 14.1 yards/reception. Tavon Austin has a 59% catch rate, at 8.7 yards/catch. Cooks has 3 career fumbles. Austin has 21. He averages a fumble for every 18 touches in his career.

Austin is a classic example that being fast doesn’t make you good. He can’t catch and can’t hold onto the ball even if he does catch it.
-----------
I remember the frenzy that this guy produced just before the draft. Teams trying to trade up to get him. His play has been that of a late round draft pick. Too small and weak. I always gave him a pass because prior to McVay they would just throw him 2 yard passes six times a game. But if McVay can’t use you then you just aren’t that good.
----------
I think he can play a role in someone’s offense but he’s going to have to take a low-money prove-it deal to show he has value to a team. If he’s willing to do that then he will probably be on a roster this fall.
----------
A two-yard reception is a deep throw to Tavon Austin; I don’t think the quality of the QB really much impacts the fact Austin is basically known as the guy who drops WR screen passes and fumbles jet sweeps.
----------
He’s at best a #3 WR and a serviceable returner, but his fumbles make him a second tier option at either position.
----------
Tavon Austin can still be extremely dangerous if he lands on a team with some completely different skilled receivers. His success in college at West Virginia was not a mirage. He is talented. He would actually be a major weapon on a team with an elite receiver like Julio Jones.
-----------
This guy could be a great option as a slot wr for a qb who uses them often like brady or brees
-----------------------------------------
My own comment: It's all about the money spent vs. the results of his play. Is he worth what he's getting paid? Imo no. Plus McVay seems to have a thing about fumblers. The telling sign was that T.A. was barely used in the playoff game vs. the Falcons. A fourth round pick sounds about right.

I never heard anything really about Tavon being a "me first" guy. He just didn't seem willing to work on route running and catching the ball. Add his poor ball security at times and lack of judgement of when to plant his foot in the ground and turn up field - you have a guy who's deficiencies zero out his strengths (speed).

Yeah I probably didn't write my post very well because I didn't really mean he was a me first guy. I think he's fairly humble and a good teammate. But I think the sudden influx of a LOT of WR talent compared to all of the other years TA was here killed his ego. Then he was injured for a lot of training camp and his inability to get the route tree down relegated him to jet sweep/RB/punt returner. A few muffed punts later his usefulness was next to none for McVay who prioritizes WRs who can run precise routes and have a complex playbook memorized.

There is a specific reason McVay used him less and less as the season wore on and his physical talent was not it. He's still worth a roster spot on a team looking for a situational playmaker for a few million a year.... just not $8 million.

@Psycho_X, oh yeah, I think he gets picked up by someone for sure. I could actually see the 49ers doing it and them trying to make him into a Taylor Gabriel clone (still think his deficiencies preclude that).

That is if the 49ers don't get Taylor Gabriel who I think is a FA.

I remember being excited about having a faster Amendola. Too bad, because we could use him.

Best of luck, I hope we can get a trade for him, even if it's something tiny like a 6th rounder.
I agree. Me too, I was super excited.
He turned out to be a healthier Donny Avery.
Anyway, he gave effort and appears to be a hard worker. But, is basically a glorified punt returner.
Good luck to Tavon.
Save $3M under the cap.

Frustrating because there were glimpses.
His game against the Colts was just a thing of beauty.
But, he is not sustainable at that salary.
Bummer.

In fact....I don't think you NEED to draft slot wrs.....but that's another topic....

You are all jealous of my player evaluations, AND YOU WILL SEE a 5'8 slot receiver with THIS 40 time dominate the NFL. Take that height argument to the curb!

I think Austin did the best he could for us. He has fast straight line speed, but couldn't run a route to save his life and even if the ball came close to him, it was a 50-50 chance those hands of stone would hold on, no matter what LACHAMP46 says!

AAAAAAAAARGH!! He's not a slot receiver!! :banghead:

He does not have the skill set of a slot receiver. Just cause you're small does not mean you are a slot receiver!!:help:

Edit: But that does not mean by elimination he is an X or Y either. He was always a tweener unfortunately. Never having the skill set to thrive in any of the above roles.

Say what you will, rejoice if thats your thing, but Tavon earned my respect in 2017 in how he handled himself in the locker room.

I always appreciated Tavon for his effort and attitude. I agree the team is going in a different direction now. I hope he has a few more years with someone outside our division. A better fit for his skills.

Well Tavon was part of the reason that made this team bare-able to watch during the Fisher years. He was exciting asf at times. Good memories but some memories I was raging at him. Think Fisher giving him that stupid contract will taint his memory for many Rams fans regardless of some of the great things he did sadly.

p.s. He's the only reason I could beat higher rated teams on Madden! Move him to the slot and it's over! lol

Greatest college player ever. Surprised he wasn’t more productive.

Guy literally couldn't run a proper route and his hands were made of stone.

maybe....but he can't catch....simple as that.

Tavon’s problem isn’t from the neck down. It’s from the neck up.

I agree with this...

I've always been a huge Tavon fan, and always wanted to see him succeed. I wish him the best. However, I really think Pharoh Cooper can step in and essentially have the same role as TA, and will probably do a better job in McVay's system.

I'm thinking the only way we move Tavon is to pay the trading team at least half his bonus this year and then maybe we get a 5th or 6th round pick for him. Otherwise, we just cut him before the bonus is due. Then we only gain $3M in cap space and eat the $8M in dead money right?

Too bad. Tavon has real value that cannot be measured in touchdowns or yards alone. Fisher and crew ruined any chance he had with the Rams by signing him to that ridiculous contract. Kid couldn't control where he was drafted or how much $ our FO threw his way.

Disagree!! Photos Copper made an All Pro bid even after Tavon started the season. Tavon had only 13 catches ?? He wants to be a RB (lmao) at 5’7 155 ? Ridiculous. Tell Tavon to eat during training camp so he can get through practice.

I hold no grudges, and think there is a possibility that his development was stunted by awful offensive coaching his first four seasons. Unfortunately, that was probably baked in the cake, as he never developed into a solid WR, and without that he simply can't justify his contract. And it's another example of a guy that was drafted for his athletic ability and never had the coaching to develop to his potential.

I wish him luck, but if you're listening, Tavon, you really need to learn how to run routes and do the little things that make good WRs good.
