I was at the game in Indianapolis his rookie year. His name might be in the record book for a while because of that game. I watched his college highlight reel 50 times between the time we drafted him and his first game.

Then he had a down year, then a really good year - and while not worth the 8th pick in the draft, was still an important piece on offense.

Given what I've seen from him - I get the height and size reservations - I'm shocked that this past year was as bad as it was.

Guy literally couldn't run a proper route and his hands were made of stone. High ceiling high bust potential typical of a Fisher pick. cough Gregg Robinson cough.

Rams would have to attach a pick to deal him, but any team taking him for 8 million would be foolish.

JMO , but I think he would be a star with Tom Brady and the Pats system . I don't even like saying it and I hope I'm wrong , but I think he's going to take off with another team .

He can regain his return threat once he ditches the yipps and some of the dancing but he's got a way to go as a wideout. Amendola is successful because he gets open and makes tough catches. Tavon hasnt proven he can do either on any kind of regular basis.

He's a great little change of pace RB... but nothing else.

I'm very thankful that I will never again see him returning a punt for us. When he somehow completely lost his ability to field a punt... I lost any hope that he would grow into the weapon we all wanted him to be.

Watch this "report" turn out to be nothing but wrong though. LOL

His roster spot and salary can be much better utilized. I do hope that we move on from him.

I also never liked him wearing Jim Everett's jersey... I really had a problem with that.

I really don't think it was an issue of McVay not knowing how to use him and more of an issue with him adapting to the new "we not me" mantra. I think egos were bruised when Woods, Watkins, and Kupp were brought in and almost immediately replaced him. Injury kept him out of competing at first and when he finally got back in he had a fumbling problem returning punts which was the nail in the coffin. He will go some where who will give him another chance to return punts/kicks and be a utility player on offense and if he doesn't fumble he'll still be electric. Just not $48 million electric.

It will be interesting to see how the "We not me" thing works with Peters.
I am going to say that he is a gadget player but under the circumstances, he is way too expensive. He was nearly invisible last year.

I'll wait until it actually happens or doesn't before wishing him bon voyage. He is currently a Ram and I will hope for the best situation for him and our team. The guy works and plays hard.

Cant really fault TA, he plays with a lot of heart and in 2016 was possibly the best blocking Rams WR on the roster. I have no idea why KD would give TA such a huge contract when he extended TA, but it is that extension that is going to cost TA his spot on the roster. I was surprised McVay wasnt able to get more out of TA, but when he couldnt earn playing time it really tied McVays hands. Leaving only gimmick plays and RB reps for TA as TA could not beat out any of the other WRs to get WR reps. Which makes the extension even more of a head scratcher, IMO TA would have signed a more team friendly contract.

But thats all water under the bridge now, time to move forward with the McVay era.

You don't ever....ever eva....draft 5'8, slot wrs....in the 1st round....neva eva eva....I don't care WHAT their 40 time is....and you know I love 40's....times, not the ounces in beer...LOL

In fact....I don't think you NEED to draft slot wrs.....but that's another topic....

dude could never catch....but he's a tough lil player....and damn fine RB......I said that once...and was jumped on....in here....by some names I still see bashing my every thought...LOL

Tavon’s problem isn’t from the neck down. It’s from the neck up. That’s the biggest reason he will never reach his potential. McVay is definitely not the type who tolerates players who can’t grasp their responsibilities or understand the offense.

Coming out of college, Tavon cashed in on his likeness (on paper) to DeShaun Jackson. Good for Tavon, right place at the right time

I don't think anyone's surprised. He definitely didn't live up to his draft status and subsequent contract. What he brought was something you could find in the mid rounds or lower cost vet. He has all this talent but so many limitations. He was never the kind or receiver who could line up, run a route and make catches with any consistency. He lost confidence in his ability to avoid fumbles on punt returns.

I imagine someone will sign him to a contract based on his reputation. I know 49er and Raider fans who think he's an exciting weapon. They didn't follow him like we did. We waited for that talent to materialize and it never happened.

Fans maybe think Tavon has a roster spot, but FO's are a very different issue, i wouldn't be surprised if Austin never makes it onto a 53 again, who can he beat in training camp, when he cant do anything of value

I never heard anything really about Tavon being a "me first" guy. He just didn't seem willing to work on route running and catching the ball. Add his poor ball security at times and lack of judgement of when to plant his foot in the ground and turn up field - you have a guy who's deficiencies zero out his strengths (speed).

Additionally, people all the time talked about Tavon as "slot" receiver because of his height and that couldn't be further from the truth. Slot receivers generally need to be able to show shiftiness and short-area quickness and change of direction skills. Tavon was always more of a straight line speed guy.

We can yell about taking a 5'8'' slot receiver really high all we want (we didn't). We took a 5'8'' outside receiver (who can't even succeed at that) who's bread and butter were gadget plays.

Getting rid of Tavon leaves room for Pharoh Cooper to take that role, I think what Pharoh gives up with speed he makes up with shiftiness. He won't threaten to take the ball to the house but by the end, all Tavon could do was "threaten" to take the ball to the house. He couldn't actually do it.

Not a huge surprise or ground breaking. I’m thinking our FO is using this as both a negotiation tactic and a notice for potential trade partners, although a trade even for a 7th seems highly unlikely.

I wonder about this? Was he a worker?

But the guy can't catch....
Sorry to yell, he's not a outside the numbers guy....he's a slot guy....not tough enough to survive in there.....cause he can't catch....

Reminds me of our TE...to be honest....Higbee.

Maybe we can agree that he's not a outside the numbers guy or a slot guy? ;)

Man I loved tavon, goes to show that all that athletic ability doesn't get you anywhere if you can't run routes or execute.

If Mcvay could not get anything out of him , idk who will. He also has to have the nfl record for TDs called back.

Good luck tavon and thanks for alot of exciting times over the years.

Wish he had hands. Or that he could run a route. Or even that he could run a sweep without gunning for the sideline at the first sign of contact.

CYA. Another sin of the past in the rearview.

He was exciting to watch on many plays. He got deep on pass plays sometimes but lack consistency. Early on you just waited for something to happen and sometimes it did. Too often the special teams got penalties on his best returns earlier with the Rams. How about the reverse field jet sweep. He got some great blocks (IIRC Kendricks made a good one) and was gone!

I'm a little surprised that McVay didn't give him more of a chance. They almost never threw the ball to him after the fake jet sweeps. You would think they would try to have him beat a LBer one on one. He had trouble learning plays his first year and I think McVay knew and didn't like that. This is not a surprise while the Rams have added playmakers on offense last year it is a good time to part ways.
