Thought I'd try a different tack than recent threads. What are your thoughts on the 9ers this year? I'm not a hundred percent sold on Jimmy G but if he can keep up his play from last year without a dip, I certainly would have some worry about them this year.

Is there defense any good??

Is Shanahan alone worth at least one win against us?? Is that overestimating his coaching ability?

It seems pretty damn hard to win twice against any team in the league, can we take them once there and at home??

Let's just say that the rivalry is alive and well

I wouldn't take any game against them lightly, but they don't have the star power or the depth to hang with the Rams the whole season. They're 8-9 win territory.

They put up a good fight last year on TNF with spare parts and they've only improved. That being said they've still got spare parts just less rusty spare parts and we've got a well oiled Lamborghini.

As it is, they're a playoff contender, we're a SB contender. They might take a game or two from us like we did against the Hags under Fish, anybody can steal a game on any given Sunday. But the law of averages say that we have the parts to finish on top of the division for a long time imo.

The Rams appear to be the class of the division.

So the Niners will be fighting for 2nd place. Should be fun to follow their progress, though.

I do anticipate that the Niners might become a force in future years.

I like the rivalry but I think our team is ready now and the niners are 2 to 3 years away.

I have to monitor myself, because my hate for the Niners is of epic proportions. I have been saying that I will believe that Jimmy G. is a legitimate franchise QB if he can lead the Niners to a 6-2 record when everyon e still has at least has a theoretical chance at the playoffs. I say 6-2 because the "experts" are already saying he's one of the next great QB's, and they don't lessen the value of 5 wins at the end of last season at all (they should). To be fair, our own Jared Goff lost the last 7 games in 2016 vs Jimmy G's 5 wins last year. Jimmy had several years behind Tom Brady to ready himself for the starters role in frisco, while Jared was thrown into the Fisher dumpster fire of an offense....

Buckner on the Niner's dline is good.

But the Niners are going to get crushed, imo. DC's will pore over the 5 games by Jimmy G. looking for tendencies. They will get crushed by expectations and by good teams.

I'm not sure if they're a playoff contender tbh. Are they better than any of the teams below? I don't think so, not yet.

I expect the Niners will be competitive. They do have some good players on defense, and their offense will be at least competent. I so want to crush them in our first meeting to show them that they are our biatches.

I see them as a 7-8 win team.

My take is that the Niners are an 8-9 win team. I respect their coach and QB. However, I think Jimmy G. is getting overhyped. He's being built up like he's the next Brady. IMO, he's more Bulger or Romo. What DCs are going to recognize is that Jimmy is really, really good when he can take his drop and get the ball out of his hands quickly to one of his first couple reads. He's very accurate within 15 yards, but he struggles throwing the deep ball and driving the ball down the field. How do you defend him? You need to press his WRs to disrupt timing and saturate the 0-15 yard range with bodies. Force him to beat you deep. Force him to beat you by driving passes down the field into tight windows. He's also a guy who is more susceptible than your average QB to seeing ghosts when you hit him.

As for the Niners team, I'm not impressed with their talent. Both the offense and defense are pretty average to mediocre in terms of overall talent. They've improved, but I don't think they're a contender at this point.

I don't see them as a playoff contender with Garappolo. I think they way overpaid for a limited sample size, and like the Kaepernick deal, it's going to burn them.

If we're just talking this upcoming season, the 9ers are DOOMED! Maybe they take last game of season as Rams rest starters again, but that's it.

7-9 wins max. I’m not worried about them in the least. We’ve added to many pieces for them to be worrisome this year. I envision we don’t play our starters again week 17 sadly because we’ll have this division wrapped up by then.

Don’t see them beating them twice again this year.

Actually, I'd say the list is longer (in no particular order)

Philly
Washington
Dallas
New Orleans
Carolina
Atlanta
Green Bay
Minnesota
Los Angeles

And maybe...

Detroit
New York

I think they'll have moments this season, but the 9ers still have a lot of holes to fill.

As much as I detest all of the Jimmy G-string and Kyle Shanahan media worship - I would like Rams to think of the 69ers as a very formidable opponent and play with some vengeance in their blood from last year's week 17 loss by our 2nd string against their 1st string.

This year? They're not. If they draft well and do good in free agency for a year or two who knows.

If the 49ers are a threat to the Rams this season, then something will have gone seriously wrong for the Rams in 2018

I also think he is over hyped. 5 wins, 7 TDs and 5 INTs. I think Jimmy Gs timing was perfect. He caught teams on cross country road trips, in between big games. Played the Rams when they played no starters. The Rams second string intercepted him twice. I say they are no better than 8 and 8 and the Cardinals will be more of a threat. By the way, all the "experts that say he is the next Joe Montana are the same experts that said Goff was a bust.
