I think the majority of us are on the same page about starting right away. Personally I think everyone learns better from doing, and when you do make a mistake then you learn from it and know how to not make that mistake again. Granted the NFL is a bit different than most jobs but I think these principles apply to pretty much everything to some extent.

Unless he's struggling to pick the offense up, start Goff if you want to win.

Since 2008 there have been 10 QB drafted in the top 5 and the only one to not start day 1 was Blake Bortles. He started game 3 and even his coach admitted it was a mistake and that he should have started all along
If he doesn't start game 1, then something's wrong

That's about to change. The Eagles are making the right decision and sitting Wentz. Jaguars should have done the same with Bortles.

The facts and our opinions are 2 different things, I voted to start Goff week 1 because it's what I want/hope for. The fact is it all depends on training camp and preseason performance. If Goff picks up the offensive scheme and is winning in preseason then go for it. I see something in his eyes that says winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Having seen all of the young Goff's college games and all of his 2015 season snaps more than once, I would be a little stunned if he's not ready to start the season based on his resilience/adversity from his growing pains as a true freshman starting QB at the university of California.

I get that the speed of the college game and the Bear Raid shotgun offense he ran are concerns for how quickly his natural QB skills will translate to the pro level. (thank the good lord for gurley to buy him some more time learning while the real bullets are flying)

I'm not such a homer that I will pop off and guarantee he starts week 1 at the 49ers, though I have faith he will likely earn that right by the 3rd preseason game. Either way I'm fine with the coaches holding him out until they see fit. I'm expecting a week 1 start but preparing for both cases.

Watching Goff's mellow kind of dorky shy demeanor in his interviews has some people fooled. This young man turns into something different than he portrays in his interviews. When he puts on the football uniform and is between the white lines in a live game, he turns into a different guy. (something like that "clark kent" character.....)

Start him week 1.

If a QB can't overcome early struggles, he's not mentally strong enough to be an NFL starter to begin with.

Just curious but what are your reasons for thinking this way @jrry32 ? I know Rodgers sat for a bit and is now regarded as the best QB, but how many other examples of that are there? And on top of that, how many were in a situation where a great QB (in this case Farve) was already in place?

I'm in the mindset that you learn by doing, not watching.

I don't want Goff starting game one, Monday Night football AT SF. Think Goff might have a few butterflies? I bet he'll be puking his guts out five minutes before taking the field. Millions watching and every sports talking head will be criticizing the Rams every little mistake Goff makes in the game. How the Rams sold the farm. The Rams can beat the 48'ers with Keenum. Let Goff start in a game that's not in the national spotlight. Any mistake he makes will be amplified a hundred fold.

If he's mentally ready, and looks solid in preseason - you start him. His arm talent is the best we have. But if he's not quite there yet, I would wait a few weeks.. which honestly, might be best.

If he has no problem picking up the playbook, I want him to start right away. He's the most talented quarterback we have on the roster, and gives us the best chance to win.

I think he should sit the first two games. Keenum behind an Oline not yet devastated my injuries should do pretty darn good. Let Goff see the speed of the game, get comfortable with the play calling, and then send him to the wolves.

Some guys are ready to start. Some aren't. Off the top of my heads, here's a list of current starters who sat for most or all of their rookie year:
Tom Brady
Aaron Rodgers
Philip Rivers
Carson Palmer
Kirk Cousins
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Drew Brees
Jay Cutler
Tyrod Taylor

Those are the guys I can think of that are starting caliber. It's plenty of successful QBs. Learning by doing has its drawbacks. One of them is that it reinforces bad habits. It makes sense to start a guy whose mechanics are sound. But when you have a guy who needs mechanical work, I think you do him a disservice by throwing him out there as a rookie.

My thoughts? Start him when he's ready.

Simple.
Next question?

I wouldn't object to Keenum playing all year if he was giving us the best chance to win. Goff will be ready when he's ready. Throw him in when you think that he's getting close so he suffers a bit of adversity to build some humility and character perhaps - but don't rush it. He's got a long career ahead of him. 6 or 7 weeks on the bench isn't going to hurt.

He starts day 1. We're not asking him to "win the game", just not lose it. I can see his first game stats something like 12 of 23 for 170yds, 1 td, 2 ints---we score 20 points and win. Goff can put up Keenan type numbers now. Case hasn't started very many NFL games in his career. It will be up to the coaching staff to give Goff some throws that he'll be comfortable with and build on throughout the season. But yeah, he starts game 1.

I'd be shocked given Fishers track record concerning playing/starting rooks week
one if Goff plays vs SF on MNF

It's MNF and the first game in LA. Goff is the #1 pick that they traded a lot for. And the other option is Case Keenum. Goff will start.
