Tutu Atwell is only ball carrier in NFL to hit 21 mph twice this season

When the Los Angeles Rams drafted Tutu Atwell in the second round last year, they did so believing he would be a speedy receiver who could take the top off a defense. Up to this point, he hasn’t had many opportunities to show off his wheels, but there’s absolutely no denying how fast he is.

Atwell has topped 21 mph twice this season: once on his 54-yard catch last week and once on his 9-yard carry Sunday against the Panthers. Believe it or not, but he’s the only player in the NFL who has hit 21 mph twice this year as a ball carrier.

What’s even more amazing is that Atwell has just two touches all season. So each time he’s had the ball in his hands, he’s eclipsed 21 mph. He hit 21.46 mph on his 54-yard catch, which is fourth-fastest in the NFL, and his 21.09 mph carry on Sunday ranks 13th. As J.B. Long notes, Atwell has the three fastest speeds by a Rams player this season.

The Rams are slowing integrating the second-year receiver into the offense, but his opportunities are still very limited. If he can improve as a route runner and receiver, his speed could become a real weapon for Los Angeles.

He’s just a little fast, huh? Rams need to keep mixing him in. If he keeps making plays he will open the field up more and more.

Yeah I'm still liking Tutu. Never gave up on him and we'll see if he gets more reps. I know Stafford would love more opportunities to go bombs away with him. I'm looking at a few scores from him this year and it's not out of the realm of possibility. Imagine Stafford with more time to set those up this year.... yikes.

as well as taking the top off the D, how about some delayed 3 yd. crossers as an outlet for Staff...get him the ball in space...get what you can and get down or get OOB...let's face it 150ibs getting hit at 21 mph your talking totaled to use an autobody analogy...ala Az Hakim...

In certain situations I’ve run faster.

The thing you do is STOP treating the guy like a "one trick pony. Get him on the field. Put him in the slot, wide, in a stack...whatever.

Find out where he can help and go for it. With Jefferson coming back it only strains defenses if McVay works ways to get the ball out quick.

Burners like Powell and Tutu can contribute and mJe a defense account for them.

If you only use them on gimmick plays, defenses are gonna figure it out...but if you get them out on routes as receivers they add problems. Use Tutu or send him packing...that's what I think. Powell is the return guy so we know he sticks around.

Can he block in the running game?

Yeah and I think the usage is a tell to a large extent. If a guy comes in and they have him running shit like screens and the occasional schemed throw or in Tutu's case primarily clearouts deep it probably means he still hasn't mastered the playbook yet. Rams like to have that mental side at a high level and if you're not there then you'll get used for what you can do for the scheme and other weapons which is bit part type roles.

My frustration with Tutu is that he doesn't look fast unless he's running full speed on a nine. He doesn't look quick underneath with the ball in his hands. The guy who instantly separates on his college film hasn't really shown up for us. So basically he's a micro pass game weapon that they have to be careful with in terms of how they use him. They can't even use him on jet sweeps apparently, and probably out of fear of him getting killed idk. But I'm hoping his problem is the mental side and that we'll start seeing him worked in more and more with good results.

Also and btw it is irritating that he didn't do much with the window of Van being out. This should have been his time to show out. But now here we are six weeks later, Van should be back soon and Tutu is still buried on that depth chart somewhere between the monster sized depth options.

So the indicator on whether he's going to cut it with this team will be that usage. We need to start seeing him winning on intermediate routes and better using his speed and athleticism. He should be feasting on the digs and comebacks for example, given the respect teams have for his speed. It's not like he's a poor route runner like Tavon was. The guy can get in and out of breaks pretty damn smoothly and adjust to the ball in the air. But mentally he is clearly not on par with guys like Kupp and Van.
