Lewan had an incident that might have factored into the equitation, however, if the Titans drafted before the Rams they would have taken Robinson too. From the neck down GROB was off the charts, again, sometimes before you make a mistake another team makes it for you. Let's all thank the Browns for drafting Johnathan Paul Manziel because Jeffrey Michael Fisher loved him.

And that “from the neck down” thing, is and always has been incredibly flawed thinking

I absolutely hated the GRob pick on that very account

Woulda picked K Mack

Woulda settled for J Matthews

I concur wanted Matthews just based on lineage, however, GROB amazed everyone including every high profile NFL executive...I don't see how one could have not liked the pick, it appeared like he had it all and again I would have gone Matthews, but understood the GROB selection.

You have to understand that GROB went to Auburn (Snead's Alma Mater) and played with Trent Fisher who was Jeff Fisher's son...That was a perfect storm that ended in disaster.

Well doing this off an iPhone one finger typing I’ll briefly elaborate

1) i didnt like he was a redshirt sophomore

2) I really, really didnt like he came from basically a rinky dink college offense (Sorry @Memphis Ram) but thats true

3) after the combine warrior, part 1, “but yeah can he play” Jason Smith fiasco, we shoulda known better...i sure as heck did

Well since then we haven't made those Jason Smith/GROB draft selections thankfully. And now w/ McVay they put more stock on brains so I think we can all start to enjoy this period we are entering.

Add that he never proved he could pass protect in college, (which is the main job of a left tackle) and was a one year wonder hyped by the national championship game.

Stupid desperation pick that would have been unnecessary if we had picked Cordy Glenn over Brian Quick which was the obvious pick to make.

I agree about not liking GRob's lack of pass protecting in college. Pass pro is the number one skill for a left tackle, and there wasn't any evidence that he could even do it well at the college level. I would have chosen Matthew's or K. Mack.

However, when it came to smarts, wasn't GRob an academic all American?

I didn't want anything to do with Lewan. His buddy the kicker rapes a girl and then he called her and was threatening her to keep quiet. Classy guy.

IIRC, every GM, scout and pundit were touting GRob to be the next Orlando Pace - the draft is such a pot-luck event sometimes. Not every top 10 draft selection turns out the way they are touted, never has and never will...

Hindsight is a beautiful thing to behold ;)

Although I must be honest I knew Manziel was going to bomb as a pro...

I had concerns with Lewan at the time. Regrettable to miss selecting him, but hard to second guess .

I feel worse not selecting Mathews.

We seem to value different things now . So, like @PressureD41 I am happy we adjusted .

The fact that Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam was walking outside the Stadium and was approached by a guy, that told him he had to take Manziel was comical. Reminds of the story of Joe Kennedy, when he was getting his shoes shinned, back in 1929, was told by the shine guy off all the stocks he owned. Kennedy thought, if a shoe shine guy can own that many stocks, something was wrong and converted the family fortune into Gold a few month before the crash of October of 29.

Haslam should have handled it the same way, but tried to look in touch with the people, well, maybe that is the reason the Browns are still a joke of a franchise.

I said it at the time and I said it loudly.

So it doesn't count as hindsight as far as I'm concerned.
I even recommended trading down a couple spots as long as you don't miss out on Jake Matthews or Taylor Lewan.

I was all-in on a left tackle however and won't claim I wanted Khalil Mack.

You are a class act Den, always have been. You were certainly in the Matthews camp but are able to see the forest thru the trees. What many seem to forget was after Fisher's initial exile of GRob, when he finally got to play in his rookie year, he was dominant. He was mauling folks. Meanwhile, Matthews career started off on the wrong foot, and he was pretty terrible as a rookie. Didn't seem then that the Rams had picked the wrong guy. He was much more effective at OG and had he stayed there I believe his career would have taken a different trajectory. Alas, they insisted on playing him at OLT and thus the bust he became.

And we did get Donald later in the draft, how many folks wish they had that pick over?
We coulda had Justin Gilbert and Eric Ebron, how bad would THAT have been

Wasn't having a go at you and I'm sorry if that's how you read my post. I was talking about the NFL GMS & scouts, he was touted as the next 'big thing' and you can't deny that. My point was that you can not guarantee 100% how a player is going to turn out otherwise players like Brady, Romo, Moon, Nighttrain Lane and Warner would have been drafted #1 in their prospective years.

There are always going to be fans that love/hate certain players.

Honestly, if we're looking at what-could-have-been, then Khalil Mack is the obvious choice, not Taylor "I'll rape you if you go to the police with the fact that my buddy raped you" Lewan.

I personally don't care. What's done is done, and there's no point in living in the past when we have such a bright future.

You know I hated taking G Rob even at the time. I liked Lewan but I am a Michigan fan but knew he’d be beast in the NFL. Still upset we took g rob with all the other players in that draft.

Imagine if we drafted Mack to pair with Donald?
