Dianna Russini has inside info on the situation and even she is calling out the Ravens for being shady. Yes, it is technically the Baltimore Ravens organization's prerogative to cancel the trade via the physical, but everyone knew that Maxx Crosby's knee was not in any shape or form up to passing any medical testing and the Ravens were cognizant of this beforehand. Supposedly, the reason for Baltimore backing out of the transaction was that their doctor(s) had concerns about the long-term impact of the injury from Year 3 on. There apparently was no concern of the short-term health of Crosby's knee despite the fact that he wouldn't be ready well past the beginning of next season.
This clearly looks to me as a case of buyer's remorse and/or purchase with premeditated intent to return. There was a bidding war for Crosby and the Ravens won out by coming up with a bid that included two first-round draft picks albeit with one coming in 2027. While the deal was obviously not official, it still stinks to high heaven as it went against the unwritten rule of business protocol around the league.
Not only did the Ravens beat out the Cowboys with their false bid, but Dallas had to move on with its alternate plans along with the rest of the league--including other interested bidders for Crosby's services--operating and game-planning for Crosby to be on the Ravens' roster. There is obviously a ripple effect on the entire league.
Baltimore likely had a change of heart once they noticed that its roster was being gutted with with multiple free-agent departures including Tyler Linderbaum to the Raiders as well as 3 former players heading to the New York Giants. Plus, Trey Hendrickson's availability and subsequent signing played a part in the Raven's "sudden" decision to renege on the deal.
Yeah, I get that a deal is done once the ink is dried on the contract, but this is no way to operate as an NFL franchise dealing with other NFL franchises in a closed network. Otherwise, the Rams should bid 3 first-round picks for any and every free agent they have interest in and wait to see how their roster shapes up afterwards before deciding whether to actually follow through on those commitments. The Ravens are almost as bad as those a-holes who return Christmas trees to Costco right after Christmas.
Also, the Raiders are fooling themselves if they think they are going to get two first-round picks for Crosby. It was questionable whether they were going to do so before the fiasco with the Ravens.
