It occurred to me when getting a view from the nosebleed seats of Levi Stadium, looking at the "ants" playing on the field, Why would I pay for a poor viewing experience? Sure, there was a massive HDTV across the way, but again..Why would I suffer traffic, pay for parking, pay high prices for food/drink, pay for seats far from the action, and then end up watching the game on a big screen tv anyway?

My HDTV at home has spoiled me, of course.....I know that staying at home, prevents me from experiencing the electricity of the crowd when big plays happen..I'm missing the tailgate and X's grilled brauts and beer....

I just wonder...The game experience at home is superior for the common fan, why would most people go sit in the stadium? Does this bode well for the building massive stadiums in the future?

It's one way to support the team financially. The players feed off the energy of the crowd when in their home stadium. Being in a crowd of fellow fans is a totally different experience than watching it at home. Hope this isn't too obvious but it's what immediately came to mind.

I used to think the same thing... until I took up golf and got a better view of what 100 yards looked like from a distance!!!. Granted at home you are up close with every play but even at Wembley stadium we were sitting at the opposite end of Givens 51 yard TD reception and we had no problem seeing what was going on...and that place seats 87,000

Hmmm honestly I don't understand why no one would want to see their team play live, even if it's expensive, I'd much prefere to see it Live
I'd give my left ACL to see the rams play live in St. Louis

It is....But then I am sure that NFL teams get a piece of NFL Sunday ticket for those staying at home....There are gear sales etc, in also supporting the team....The one part that is not replaced by the Home Experience, is giving the home team a jolt of energy when playing....

Baseball is a game better viewed with a group of people at the game, enjoying the sights and sounds and smells. You cannot find a better hotdog than the one you have at a baseball game.

Hockey is the best live sport on the planet. TV doesn't nearly do it any justice.

Basketball cannot be appreciated until you sit in the lower section of a college basketball game and are a part of a student section, seated right next to the pep band.

The only way to watch football is on your couch, with some buddies, tracking your fantasy games on redzone at the same time. The television product, televisions themselves, and fantasy football have almost singlehandedly ruined the game for live audiences.

I actually prefer sitting along way back when watching live, you actually get a feel for everything that's going on rather than just seeing a little bit of the game. I'm not sure I could watch 8 games a year from a stadium, but once or twice a season it's a fun change of pace.

I'm kind of picky so if I were to see a game live it would have to be fairly decent weather and good seats. I don't think I would enjoy extremely cold weather and seats so far away that they look like ants. If I got very good seats, I'd battle through the weather though.

I went to my first ever NFL game last year when the Rams played the Falcons. Unless I had really posh seats, I'd probably prefer the home environment of: eating what I want, pissing quickly when I want, getting drunk off quality booze, etc.

However, on TV, you don't get the 3D effect. By that, I mean, you don't get to see everything as it happens. You don't get to see how the D or O of the other team is really lining up fully. You don't have an accurate judge on distances. You don't see the coverages really.

So in that respect, being there trumps TV all the time until some kind of tech is developed where it seems like you're actually in the stands.

Because it's socially acceptable to stand up, scream, cheer, swear, and rant while you're at the game in the company of other fans. My wife tells me to calm down when I do all of these things at home in front of the TV.
On the other hand: TV timeouts, visibility issues(depending on seats), overpriced concessions, parking/traffic are the downside of the live game experience.

Overall, I still prefer going to the games in person though, especially when the team is winning. The dome was a far different place in 2001 when I went to my first game, as opposed to the spagnuolo years.

Ambiance. The experience of thousands of football fans reacting to the highs and lows of a live football game in the Flesh.

I have gone to see the Rams games vs Arizona many times over the years(dating back to the Eddie Kennison/Tony Banks days at Sun Devil stadium). I once had fantastic seats behind the Rams bench when the University of Phoenix stadium opened up several years ago. Incredible experience...if you remove the fact that i had an expensive, birds eye view of my team getting curbstomped.

Welcome aboard Shane!

They're completely different experiences. Going to the game provides a lot more than just "seeing" the game. Any live sporting event is an experience and football is the best of all. Unfotunately its only a rare treat for me but I do enjoy it. Many obviously turn the game into a huge affair with tailgate partys, etc. Good times. You dont get a sense of a lot of things (like how big the offensive linemen really are) on TV.

It is pretty cool when you hear the collective sighs, cheers, shouts, etc. from all the fans all at the same time. You just can't replicate that same experience when being at home. A local bar is gonna be closer to the game experience considering the fans are all there but it's still not on the same level.

At the same time, the level of detail, analysis, and quality of what we see on tv is far greater than what you can see from the stands. Not that the game experience is bad, it's just different. Even with the jumbotrons you only see so much as opposed to sitting 12 feet away from your 60" flatscreen.

Pesonally, living in Canada, I get to see the Rams play live maybe once every 7 years or so. However the scheduling works. But I have to go to Detroit to watch. Why? Because I love the team, I love meeting the guys, got Gilyards autograph haha, and best of all, I love taunting the lion fans when we score. I'd love to go to other stadiums to rep, but allas, I'm not rich.
