What drives me crazy is arresting someone under the pretense that they are going to hurt someone/property etc. Slippery slope stuff there.

I agree with you and I will say this.

In an accident in many states regardless of time of day breathalyzer test are performed. I would like to see text messages reviewed because if someone was texting at the time the penalty should be different just like if a person was drunk.

If I was an insurance company I would want to have a text clause.

Some stats regarding this phenomenon:

Every year, about 421,000 people are injured in crashes that have involved a driver who was distracted in some way. Each year, over 330,000 accidents caused by texting while driving lead to severe injuries. This means that over 78% of all distracted drivers are distracted because they have been texting while driving.

Each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving.Mar 7, 2016

According to a AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway. 21% of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents were distracted by their cell phones.

Hahahaha so causing an accident is worth it because they MAY cause an accident themselves? But I actually agree. Drives me insane. Like freak my life right?

you can always tell a driver that's on their phone, especially in peak hour. always take a few seconds to take off. drives you insane.

in australia a person on their P plates cannot use their phone, even through blue tooth. even just talking over the speaker while driving is enough to cause accidents. i don't know what it is but you become more focused on the phone call than the road, even though you're looking straight ahead at the road.

Former Cowboys offensive lineman Torrin Tucker was arrested in Tampa last week on a felony count of possession of marijuana, according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

Tucker, now 37, started 24 games for the Cowboys in 2003-05. He tried to continue his career the next three seasons, spending time in training camp with the Bucs, Raiders and Texans but never made another roster. He also tried to make it in the AFL and CFL before playing four games in the UFL in 2011.

Tucker also was arrested in Tampa in 2012 on cocaine/marijuana/gun charges but worked out a pretrial agreement on those charges.

Derek Loville gets 15 months for drug trafficking

Charged in 2016 along with more than 20 others, former NFL running back Derek Loville has learned his fate for his role in a drug trafficking operation.

Via Kristina Davis of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Loville has been sentenced to 15 months for his connection to the drug ring led by Owen Hanson, a walk-on tight end at USC in 2004 whose football career went nowhere — but whose criminal enterprise became fairly large, before it all fell apart.

Loville, 48, spent nine years in the NFL, playing for the 49ers, Broncos, and Seahawks and winning three Super Bowls. Loville’s low-level role (and presumably his cooperation with the prosecution) resulted in a relatively short prison term, along with a fairly small fine of $5,000.

Loville, who played for the 1994 49ers, 1997 Broncos, and 1998 Broncos, had a career-high 723 rushing yards in 1995.

Ex-NFL player De’von Hall accused of murdering his mother

De’von Hall’s NFL career consisted of just four games with the Colts, and scattered appearances on other teams’ practice squads. But while Hall’s name isn’t known to most NFL fans, his story is now getting a great deal of attention. And it’s a disturbing story.

The Los Angeles Times ran a long feature today about Hall’s descent into mental illness, which culminated in the death of Hall’s mother, for which he has been charged with murder. The story says that some of Hall’s college teammates feared he would snap and kill someone, though they thought it would be a stranger, not his mother.

The family blames the NFL.

“The NFL, in my opinion, should’ve done a better job in making sure they took care of this kid,” his mother’s brother Tony Benson said.

Hall is being held on $1 million bail and is refusing to see visitors. Some of his family members think he is so lost to mental illness that he doesn’t even realize his mother is dead. His public defender argues that he is not competent to stand trial.

Two Titans accused of assault sue their accuser

Two Titans players who were accused of assaulting a man outside a Nashville bar are now suing the man who accused them, saying that he started their physical confrontation and that they acted only in self defense.

Titans receiver Tajae Sharpe and guard Sebastian Tretola have countersued Dante Satterfield, the man who sued them in May. According to WKRN, Sharpe and Tretola say a drunk Satterfield repeatedly approached them inside a bar, then followed them out of the bar and threatened them, claiming to be part of a gang.

Satterfield stands by his story, which is that Sharpe attacked him after Satterfield told Sharpe he’d likely get less playing time this season because the Titans drafted receiver Corey Davis. Satterfield says Tretola assisted in the attack.

“When my client sued Mr. Sharpe, his agent told the media that Sharpe ‘wasn’t even there at the time [my client] was allegedly beaten up.’ In today’s court filing, Sharpe changes his story entirely and says he was there but acted in self-defense. We are confident that an impartial jury will be able to make out what actually happened that night,” Satterfield’s attorney said in a statement.

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Adolphus Washington was arrested on weapons charges Sunday in Cincinnati, according to 7 Eyewitness News in Buffalo.

Washington allegedly displayed a gun to police as officers were attempting to clear out a water park around 10 p.m.

According to the police report, Washington “reached for and displayed a gun while sitting inside his vehicle, just feet away from officers.” He was arrested on the spot and later released.

“We are aware of the incident regarding Adolphus Washington and have been in contact with him,” the Bills said in a statement released to the station. “Since it is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment.”

Washington appeared in 15 games with 11 starts for the Bills last season as a rookie after being selected in the third round of the draft. He recorded 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks last year.

Washington also faced legal issues at Ohio State after soliciting a prostitute. The charges were dismissed conditionally after completing a program.

Former NFL player Kevin Michael Sampson was arrested in Oklahoma for possession of more than a pound of marijuana and a stolen shotgun, The Oklahoman reported.

Sampson, 36, played three seasons as an offensive tackle for the Chiefs, who made him a seventh-round pick in 2004. Sampson saw action in 16 games with seven starts.

Per The Oklahoman, a Valero gas station employee called police Monday about a man acting oddly outside the store, and officers determined Sampson had taken some type of medication with stimulant properties.

A search of Sampson’s car by police yielded 21 large clear plastic bags loaded with a total of 615.7 grams of marijuana in the trunk, where they also found a stolen shotgun and digital scales, according to a police report.

Sampson posted bond Tuesday on complaints of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and knowingly concealing stolen property.

Video shows Broncos’ Cody Latimer slapping strip club bouncer

In the latest misstep for Denver draft disappointment Cody Latimer, a newly released video shows him slapping a bouncer at a strip club.

The video, obtained by TMZ, shows Latimer in an argument with a man identified as a bouncer for Diamonds Cabaret in Latimer’s hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Latimer slapped the bouncer, who responded by pepper spraying Latimer. A man identified as Latimer’s uncle then lunged at the bouncer, who hit the uncle and knocked him to the ground.

TMZ says Latimer acknowledged he is the person shown in the video but said he wasn’t trying to start a fight. Dayton police say they were never contacted in connection with the incident and there is no investigation.

Latimer was arrested last year for failing to appear in court for a traffic infraction. That incident took place after Latimer called the police on his girlfriend to say she slapped him. She was arrested for assault and disturbing the peace, and Latimer bailed her out.

The Broncos chose Latimer in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. In three NFL seasons he has 16 catches for 158 yards and one touchdown.

D’Onta Foreman arrested for weapon, marijuana possession

Texans running back D’Onta Foreman was arrested this morning on charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon and possessing less than two ounces of marijuana.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that the University of Texas police department arrested Foreman after responding to a call at 12:24 a.m. Foreman, a rookie from Texas, was released around noon.

Foreman was one of seven men police cited on marijuana possession charges after someone called police about the smell of marijuana coming from three cars parked near a Texas campus residence hall. The other six men were all cited only for possession of marijuana.

The Texans used a third-round pick on Foreman in this year’s draft.

D’Onta Foreman says gun was legal, marijuana wasn’t his

Texans running back D’Onta Foreman, who was arrested this morning on weapon and marijuana charges, says that he was legally carrying his gun and that the marijuana police found was not his.

In a statement released by his attorney, Foreman said he will submit a drug test to demonstrate he was not using marijuana.

“Prior to a search of his vehicle, D’Onta alerted the officer that he had a handgun inside of his vehicle,” the statement said. “This legal handgun was recently purchased by D’Onta and registered in his name. The handgun was properly secured inside his vehicle as required by Texas law.

A passenger in D’Onta’s vehicle was in possession of marijuana. D’Onta did not use or possess the marijuana. Upon making his bond, he will submit to urinalysis and confirm he has not used marijuana.

D’Onta appreciates the professionalism of the officers involved in his arrest and booking into the Travis County jail. We are confident this matter will be resolved justly once the state of Texas applies the applicable law to the facts.”

Foreman, the Texans’ third-round pick in this year’s draft, could be subjected to NFL discipline for the incident.

More information regarding Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott’s alleged involvement in what Dallas police called a “disturbance” at a bar on Sunday night has begun to filter out.

The police said a 30-year-old man told them he had been assaulted, but did not know who did it. TMZ has a video of the alleged victim on the ground after being hit and reports the person who took the video said the man had been in a verbal altercation with a woman in Elliott’s party.

That person says Elliott than got involved and punched the man. TMZ also spoke to someone identifield as “Sgt. Williams” from the Dallas police who said that a friend of the alleged victim also identified Elliott as the assailant and a social media post from Sunday night carried the same message with some NSFW language.

Per the TMZ report, Elliott was not at the bar when police arrived on the scene. No one has been arrested and police say they are continuing to investigate. The NFL is also looking into the incident.

Former Browns and Patriots linebacker busted for marijuana

Former Browns and Patriots linebacker Eric Martin was arrested in Arkansas Saturday for possession of marijuana.

According to KAIT, Martin was stopped for doing 64 mph in a 45 mph zone, and while stopped, an officer said he smelled marijuana, and his drug dog partner alerted as well.

The Corning Police Department said: “The driver then stated he had marijuana in the vehicle at that time.”

A search also yielded a few rolled marijuana cigarettes and paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana in the trunk of his car.

Martin spent parts of the 2014 and 2015 seasons with New England. He also spent time with the Browns and Saints, and was last with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. He’s currently listed as “suspended” on their roster, which might explain why he was in Arkansas and not Canada.

Former Jets, Packers running back Brandon Burks arrested for drug possession

Former New York Jets and Green Bay Packers running back Brandon Burks was arrested in Enterprise, Ala. on drug possession charges, according to Jeremy Wise of the Dothan Eagle.

Burks was arrested Saturday night and charged with marijuana possession, which is a second-degree misdemeanor.

The arrested ensued after a car Burks was traveling in was stopped and officers reported marijuana found in close proximity to Burks.

An undrafted free agent out of Troy last year, Burks carried 31 times for 120 yards and one touchdown in four preseason games with the Packers. He didn’t make the roster but signed with the Jets practice squad in December before being promoted and active for the team’s final game against Buffalo. Burks carried two times for minus-4 yards in his only regular season action.

The Jets released Burks in April.

Dante Fowler arrested for simple battery, criminal mischief

Jaguars defensive end Dante Fowler spent some of his final hours before the start of training camp in police custody.

Fowler was arrested on Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, Florida and booked into jail shortly after 9 p.m. Per a report from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Fowler was charged with simple battery and criminal mischief. He was bonded out of jail early on Wednesday morning.

Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports, via a police report, that Fowler was arrested after an altercation in an apartment complex parking lot. A man allegedly criticized Fowler’s driving, leading to an argument that included Fowler hitting the other man and stepping on his glasses after they were knocked off. Fowler also allegedly took the other man’s bag of groceries, which included “recently purchased liquor,” and threw it in a lake. Fowler’s alleged victim was not injured.

The Jaguars issued a statement saying they are aware of the situation and have spoken to Fowler.

Both of the charges are misdemeanors and Fowler could also see disciplinary action taken by the league, which will likely be looking into the incident and following the legal proceedings related to the arrest.

Letroy Guion taking DUI arrest to trial in Hawaii

AP

Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion is taking his case to trial after being arrested on DUI charges in Hawaii last month.

According to the Associated Press, Guion’s attorney, Kevin O’Grady, is seeking witnesses of the arrest for the upcoming trial, which is scheduled for August.

He was pulled over in Waikiki for drifting between lanes and failed a breathalyzer test. Police records of the incident quoted Guion as telling officers “I know I’m drunk.”

I’ve been drinking Hennessy all night,” Guion told police. “I don’t drink any of that weak stuff, only the hard stuff.”

Records of the arrest had Guion’s blood alcohol level at 0.086 percent, which is 0.006 over the legal limit in Hawaii.

It would seem that Guion doesn’t have much of a defense on the surface unless procedures weren’t correctly adhered to. Nevertheless, he appears set on giving a trial a chance.

Guion is already suspended for the first four games of this season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. An additional suspension for violating the conduct policy could be forthcoming as well.
