Phil Taylor reportedly out for year with quad injury

Defensive tackle Phil Taylor‘s return to action this summer set him up to be one of the year’s best comeback stories, but it looks like that will have to wait until at least 2018.

John Keim of ESPN.com reports that the quad injury Taylor suffered in the Redskins’ preseason game with the Bengals will keep him out for the entire season. Jay Gruden said on Sunday that Taylor would have an MRI on Monday and the results of that test delivered the bad news.

A 2011 first-round pick in Cleveland, Taylor’s first few years showed a good deal of promise but he missed 11 games in 2014 and then all of the last two seasons because of knee injuries. He impressed at Redskins camp this summer, raising hopes that he could pick up where he left off that have apparently been dashed.

A.J. Francis and Joey Mbu are the next two players up on the depth chart at nose tackle in Washington, although they could also shuffle Ziggy Hood inside as they make a plan for life without Taylor.

Bad darts that.

John Ross leaves with knee injury

Bengals receiver John Ross left in the first quarter of Thursday’s game with a left knee injury, and the team listed him as questionable to return. Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Ross also had his right knee examined.

The first-round draft pick injured his right knee in September 2014, and although he didn’t miss any games, he underwent postseason surgery to repair two meniscus tears. He returned a few months later and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which required surgery in April 2015.

Ross spent the offseason rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. He had one carry for 8 yards Saturday in his preseason debut.

On Thursday night against the Colts, Ross caught one pass for 6 yards and then ran a jet sweep for 25 yards before leaving.

Cyrus Jones leaves Patriots game with knee injury

The Patriots saw a player go down with a knee injury last week without being contacted and the same thing happened in the second quarter of Thursday’s game with the Giants.

Cornerback Cyrus Jones may not be as important a player as wide receiver Julian Edelman, but his fate may be the same. The Patriots announced Jones would not return to the game shortly after he went down clutching his right knee while running with a receiver on a passing play. Edelman tore his ACL last week and will miss the entire season.

Jones, a 2016 second-round pick, played 10 games as a rookie and looked like a good bet to make the roster again this year. He spent time as a punt returner during his rookie season, something of added value with Edelman out, although it was a mixed bag as he fumbled several times in that role.

The Patriots also lost rookie defensive end Derek Rivers to a knee injury during the preseason. He is also expected to miss the season.

49ers safety Don Jones tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in Thursday’s preseason finale, according to his Snapchat. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area said the team will place him on injured reserve for the season.

Jones joined the 49ers in the offseason for his special teams ability and was on the bubble anyway. Adrian Colbert now could take that role.

Jones has played in 56 games in seven seasons but has only three career snaps on defense in his career. He has played for five teams in his career, including Cleveland and Houston last season.

That sucks. Even as bad as he messed up my Pats last night, how can anyone not pull for Eric Berry?
FWIW, Dont'a Hightower's injury is a minor MCL sprain, and he may start next week

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/09/11/report-ronald-darby-to-miss-4-6-weeks/

Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby left early in his first game with the team on Sunday due to what was diagnosed as a dislocated ankle.

Darby went for more tests on the ankle Monday to determine the extent of the injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that “no major ligament damage” was found, which he terms “surprisingly good news” for Darby.

Darby is expected to miss 4-6 weeks as a result of the injury.

The Lions are down a punter. Again.

Lions punter Kasey Redfern suffered a very serious knee injury on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Redfern suffered a torn ACL, torn MCL and partially torn patellar tendon.

The injury took place when Redfern bobbled a snap and tried to run for a first down. He wasn’t able to pick up the first down and took a hard hit, ending his season.

Detroit was already without its top punter, Sam Martin, who opened the season on the non-football injury list.
