We're not going to risk injury to our starters to get Mannion reps. There are plenty of other backup QBs in the NFL who look plenty good with the second team.

I get the logic behind not playing our starters.

And I am not a mannion backer Per se.

But he deserves a shot with at least the better backups. Notebloom, Demby, Blythe Elrenkamp and Williams.
Neary, Allen and Lucas were getting ran over and ran by.

Yeah. Great day at training camp! The swagger is back with this team. Gonna be a great season fellas!

Met up with @VeteranRamFan and his grandson. He is a super nice guy. Showed us around, talked about the Rams over the years. Big thanks again!

Some standout plays were a sideline catch by Kupp, where he reached up high and snagged a bullet pass from Goff.

Joyner had a nice pick later.

And, most interesting, was a formation with Gurley lined up as a wide-out. Both VeteranRamFan and I can't recall a play from last year with Gurley as wideout, so maybe it's McVay busting out some new plays.

Lastly, great to see Suh out there. He looks big in person. And, he seemed motivated and to be working hard and focused, even during warm ups. He seems like he wants to be playing some football.

Anyway, exciting stuff today. Way better than the crap we saw Thursday night!

That’s not the point for most around here. I mean, even when Goff got pumeled his first year, many were able to understand the effect of the supporting cast on a QB.

The issues with Mannion are
- even when he has time he makes many bad throws
- his lack of mobility to extend a play...even for a second. Terrible footwork
- his ability to read and go through progressions with any sort of speed or under any sort of pressure.
- and many of those things have lacked in progress for a QB who has been around the NFL 4 years.

Most of us would LOVE to know we have a viable backup QB. He’s just not it. And ‘time with the ones’ or with ‘better backups’ isn’t likely to improve those deficiencies.

But I do respect where you’re coming from. I just disagree.

Those are all the top backups, aren't they? I don't think there are any "the better backups" to give him a shot with.

Pre-season is primarily to evaluate new players/rookies/determine remaining spots on the 53 man roster. There is little reason to risk injury to starters like Goff/Gurley/Woods/Kupp/Joyner or grizzled vets like Whitworth/Sullivan/Suh/Talib. It might be interesting to see a little of some of the new players like Peters/Cooks but we would all be upset if they were injured before the regular season. On the other hand - players like Mannion/Lucas/D Williams/Hager will get more pre-season work as they fight for their spots on the roster.

I didn't see a single play from the game but stats like Mannion's is SHOCKING to say the least for a backup QB. It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for a QB to have worse stats for a half of football. I had nothing against Mannion and thought he was serviceable until I saw his performance against the 49ers in week 17 last year. Granted he had 2nd stringers to work against 1st stringers with he provided a mediocre pre-season performance at best. Absolutely no pep in his step and other than a couple decent long throws - I was left unimpressed. I have been skeptical ever since.

The backup qb needs to fill in when the starting qb gets injured. There's no freaking way that Mannion should ever become the starter if Goff goes down! Unless we want really good draft spots.

I imagine that we'll come to find out that Noteboom, Demby, Blythe, and Allen are actually a pretty solid group of backups. Plenty of other backup QBs did more with the same caliber of players around them. Mannion isn't a rookie anymore. When was the last time he stepped up and showed something?

IIRC Gurley lined up out wide in the cowboys game and caught a pass from Goff that he took in for a TD. But I dont remember him lining up out wide any other times during the season.

Actually, Gurley hit the line of scrimmage so fast, that he blew right threw two defenders, like a wideout. But, on that play he was in the backfield, lined up directly to the right of Goff. At the snap, Gurley just took off to the right, and immediately into his pattern. Didn't stop to block or anything.

It was great meeting you, @Karate61 and your son. He is a very respectful young man and gives me faith in the future of our youth. And thank you for being so nice to my grandson. Funny story when we left, he asked me how long we had known each other!? Guess that tells us how well we enjoyed each other's company. I would thoroughly enjoy going to a game with you and your family.

As far as my camp report, Karate61 basically said it all! I'll add one more thing, maybe two. First team O and D look real good! Nothing like what we watched on Thursday night. I want to also add that on one play, Suh was lined up over Havenstein who was at RT. At the snap, Suh bull rushed with both arms extended and knocked Hav back and off balance. If it was a real game Suh would have blown past his blocker and got to the QB, since it wasn't, he let up and Hav regained position.

I think this was one of the first practices I have attended this year where I really just sat back and enjoyed talking football and watching the players do their thing. A very relaxing afternoon. Enjoyed myself and the dinner that followed with my Grandson. Here is a picture of us together at camp today...FYI, he's only 12 years old and I'm 6 feet 2 inches tall.

My memory isnt what it used to be lol. Looks like McVay is finding more ways to get the ball in the hands of Gurley, that can only mean more TDs.
