Did a little reading on Dotson.

He did play Right Guard as a rookie. He will be 27 in a couple weeks. The Rams will take-on a $2.7M cap hit.

I don't know that he is injury prone given his first three seasons. The only injury I saw was an ankle in his 2nd year, causing him to miss the final seven games. In his rookie season, Dotson missed a few games when he was on the COVID List.

My guess is that Dotson will start at RG because of the cap hit, and the Rams sensitivity to 2023 cap savings. As another poster reminded me a few weeks ago, cap space not used in 2023, can be carried-forward. I don't think they make this move with the expectation that he is a top reserve.

Wondering if Avila is now the backup Center and if Allen is gone. Keep a 3rd decent prospect on the PS.

My take on this is pretty simple. Dotson seems better than the worst OL we would have kept otherwise, so it is an upgrade. We effectively trade a 4th round pick for 6th (the 5th's cancel out). He has experience and still has potential for improvement.
Assuming Bruss needs another year or gets cut, it looks like Dotson is good insurance for RG. I think Anchrum is serviceable but majorly unproven.

Judging from some of their comments it sounds like he mighta been their version of Bobby Evans. I hope he isn't that bad. Depth is very important in this league. They found out the hard way last year. Is he better than Bruss?

I think you're overestimating Bobby Evans... yeesh

From reading a broader range of opinion. He wasn’t a scheme fit. Said himself that he is a better, more natural, right guard but was played on the left. The false start penalties were partly due to his OL coach asking them to get an aggressive jump on the DL. He had trouble. He looks great - like pro bowl level good - when blocking on the move so looks like a great fit for how we will run the ball. He’s very solid at pass protecting, which is one reason they plugged him in at his less favoured position. We could have got a steal and he has the opportunity to earn a big contract if he delivers in the way that pundits and fans say. He was good but has the talent to be great. Snead has a very good track record so we should have some faith
Just felt like going back through this thread to see what we were all saying about the trade..

This absolutely nailed it. Right on the head.

Yea I like to go to old threads to. See the takes and compare to reality.

But regarding Mcvay needing to run the ball, I seem to remember in '21 that we went on a bad streak with Stafford and Mcvay throwing too dam much and Mcvay searching for answers with the end result being getting the run game going with Sony and then the balance catapulting us forward. Hell, I am getting old so maybe I am tripping. But maybe we are seeing some repeat Mcvay history here.

Actually I just searched....Here is that 3 game loss streak showing Sony Michel's carries folowed by 5 straight wins with Sony avg over 20 carries a game. I think this is when the light went on for Mcvay and it made the game easier for Stafford as well.

For the first time in years the IOL is a strength. Shelton is improving with experience along with Avila and Dotson. With Pittsburg, Dotson was streaky in his play, he seems better under Wendell and the Rams scheme.

I think Noteboom's health has doomed his chances to stay with the team next year. I expect them to either draft a OT in the third or 4th round or sign a young vet prospect. Miami's RT Austin Jackson is coming off his rookie contract next year. Taken in the lower part of round 1 by Miami in 2020 he's only now looking like a decent RT. He's pretty athletic for a OT and with good quick feet, he has the makings of a decent RT with the right coaching. He would be another plug n play type young vet in the mold of Dotson and Corbett. He's playing well this year and he's the kind of young player who wouldn't break the bank to sign.

Yep.
The team was in desperate need of an identity reboot and the gave it to them. They used jumbo sets sometimes.. complete commitment after being way too pass happy.
He believes the pass is the easiest way to win.. and he's not wrong. But you can't only do that.

good find...

We did however start 7 and 1 with our highest yardage running being 67 yards.

The Green bay game we were down big like right from the beginning if i recall.

The Tennessee game was the one where we just kept trying to pass and getting smashed when it clearly wasn't working.

I hope they do. Trading picks for a guy for one season seems like a bad move if they can’t resign him.
He's a tough call for me. I like having a strong RG and it is starting to show in that run game potency. But his history makes me leery of putting too much investment in him. I think a good approach is offer him median starter money for 3 years and if he signs great.

Guys like him might best serve the team in giving them comp picks after some dumb team throws big FA money at him.
