I still can’t believe Fisher passed on Mathews after coaching his Dad (Bruce Mathews) all those years with the Oilers and Titans. The bloodlines made Jake feel like a can’t miss prospect.

Instead, we picked Robinson, AND MISSED, big time.

Bruce Mathews played 19 seasons. Didn’t miss a single game the final 14 seasons. WHAT was Fisher thinking?
I think he was distracted during the draft trying to find his car keys in his pocket.

Ha!

Yeah, and don’t look now, but Jake Mathews hasn’t missed a start in any of the last 8 seasons. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree with him.

Maher is a good kicker with a strong leg. His problem was consistency. He missed 4 extra points in one game which is why the Cowboys soured on him. When a kicker is streaky like that, It's normally in his head. That said overall he's shown himself to be a good kicker. But I can see why teams are wary of signing him. The ironic part is that the Rams parted ways with Tanner who missed 2 extra points in one game but had been perfect in TC. So now they sign the guy who holds the record for the most missed extra points in a game in NFL history.

With Brett Maher when the team is on the opposing 40 they are within Brett's range. That said he has proved he can miss from any range. He will bring excitement to the kicking game. LOL If he can get his head straight and keep it there the Rams will have a true weapon like it was with Zuerlein in his prime.

Obviously, this will be a prove-it type of contract.

Personally, I would have preferred Robbie but his leg isn't what it used to be. IMO Tanner is one of those PKs who bounces around for a few years before he finally puts it all together. Very common with PKs.

It was the slogan that the then President Polk used to expand the United States by adding Texas, California, and Oregon. Sorry but I love the study of history.
"den-the-coach was a slogan used by Polk? I don't remember ever hearing that.

My mini "scouting" report on Brett Maher:

The Good:

I fast-forwarded through the last pre-season game and every single one of Maher's kicks looked GREAT. Kickoffs are no problem, he can kick it for a touchback with ease. On FG's he's a righty who prefers the left hash mark. He's got a real easy consistent swing. He was 5/5 on XP's and 2/2 on FG's (from 46 and 33). Kicks a very straight ball with a tiny hook near the end. (In my opinion, for a kicker, a slight hook is a lot easier to control than a slight fade). All of his extra points were consistent-- not a single one was in doubt, and they all consistently went through just to left of center. Looks like he has a TON of leg strength, so his extra points were a nice easy swing. Only one of his 7 kicks (the 46 yarder) was from the right hash, but that one was never in doubt. All in all, he sure looks like an immediate upgrade over Tanner Brown.

The Bad:

Only other time I recall watching Maher was during his epic collapse vs. Tampa in the playoffs. On the 4 missed XP's, 3 were slices and one was a hook. Frankly, as long as he can eliminate the slices, I think he'll be ok. On the slices, I'm Not sure if the problem was his plant foot, or if his striking foot was too "open", or if he didn't follow through properly... but man, that game was horrible.

Sure looks like he's got plenty of leg, and based on last week, his mechanics look real good and real consistent. Can he avoid mind-fucking himself? That's really the only question!

But just based on last week's 7 kicks, every single one was perfect. Cautiously optimistic.

Maher looks like the kind of name where he's got some BS way of pronouncing it. Like "It's MAY-OR." Or "It's MI-AIR." So I am hoping he pronounces it "MAH-ERR" or it's gonna be a real bad sign.

Nice breakdown.

And for those that were too lazy to google it, He missed 5 XP in a row. He missed one in the game before the Tampa game where he missed 4. So, this was most likely a mental thing that he carried from the previous game miss, which he probably then was overthinking and overcompensating for.

In the end he got it figured out it appears, so I like the gamble on him.

Kickers man. They get in these grooves at times. Seen it with Kickers such as Butker and Legatron when they were coming back from injuries. Sometimes it lingers, other times they seem to get back to being consistent like Butker has.

Going 1 for 6 on PATs in the playoffs last year was legendary lol. Hopefully, he worked out the yips.

So Maher has issues with PATs. There are 2 viable solutions:
1) a couple false starts and the PAT becomes an easy FG.
2) 6 TDs + 6 made PATs=42 points.
7 TDs + 7 missed PATs=42 points.
If the offense is supposed to carry the defense this year, they will have to up their output to 7 TDs per game instead of 6.

Problem solved. 42 points should be enough to beat the seahawks.
