No one is talking about Chris Watt, 6'3" 322lbs. who was drafted by the Chargers in 2014 and started several games for them before getting ACL to his knee. Its been 2 years since his surgery and claims to be fully healed. If so, he stands as good a chance of backing up Sully as anyone.

Wouldn't the reason be the same as the one given re: Toth? If they haven't signed him, isn't he considered gone?

Having so said, I would still love to find out more about where they both (Watts and Toth) stand but, when they were never signed, there is no reason for the Rams to make a statement of any sort.

You don't announce everyone that applies for a job, just those who make the interview stage. In this case, the tryouts were the resumes and the 90-man roster would be the interviews. We're still a long way from the top 53 who actually get the jobs.

I'm not sure if the practice squad would be the interns as I try to wring this analogy out, but I suspect I was already reaching and will try to quit while I may yet retain any semblance of relevance.

Colt fan comments from SB Nation/Stampede Blue (TST's Colt alternative within the site):
Wow!
I certainly didn’t expect Blythe to make the 53, but I sure didn’t see him getting cut THIS early.

Not the end of the world but I am a little disappointed to see Blythe go

he was completely overmatched last year
replacing him will not be difficult

Agree
Blythe did not have the athleticism and strength to overcome his short arms. Thought he was really out-played on several occasions.

Take it how you want it. Interesting on what other fans think. Doesn't sound promising though.

I do not agree that Robinson is a "highly probable starter".

Until he proves something on a consistent basis he's still a bum.

Rams lineman Austin Blythe kept tight grip on starting job this season
By Rich Hammond

Cut by the Colts two years ago, he went from fill-in to full-time starter this season
https://www.pe.com/2019/02/01/rams-...-kept-tight-grip-on-starting-job-this-season/

ATLANTA – It’s not a sight any player wants to see, his nameplate missing from the top of his locker.

The Rams didn’t cut Austin Blythe on that November day, though. Just the opposite. They moved his locker location a few stalls to the left, to the area reserved for starting offensive linemen, and that spoke volumes.

Less than two years after the Indianapolis Colts waived him, Blythe will start at right guard for the Rams in the Super Bowl on Sunday against New England. Given an opportunity as a fill-in starter at the beginning of this season, Blythe seized it and now is considered a big part of the Rams’ long-term offensive-line plans.

Blythe, a backup in 2017, started the first two games of this season when Jamon Brown served a two-game league suspension. During that time, even as he played well, Blythe kept his head down and was reluctant to talk about the (increasing) likelihood that he might keep the job even when Brown returned.

That’s what happened. Blythe’s play never dipped and then, after their Week 8 game, the Rams waived Brown, a full-time starter in 2017. Blythe took up new real estate in the locker room, between right tackle Rob Havenstein and center John Sullivan, the same way he lined up on the field.

“It was strange, a little bit,” Blythe said. “I walked in and my locker wasn’t there anymore. I think it was probably more of a shock to me because I have so much respect for Jamon as a player and a person. To me, it was like, ‘Oh, that’s too soon,’ but that’s just how it was.”

Blythe said he increasingly felt comfortable as a starter, and took more ownership of the starting spot after the week 2 victory over Arizona, when coaches told him he would remain with the first team.

That meant a lot. The Colts drafted Blythe, a talented college center at Iowa, in the seventh round in 2016, the same year they drafted center Ryan Kelly in the first round. Blythe appeared in only eight games as a rookie before the Colts waived him in May 2017 and the Rams signed him the next day.

Blythe started to cross-train at guard and center with the Rams, and played well as a backup in 2017, so strong that when the Rams learned Brown would have to serve a suspension, they never strongly considered another option. Blythe filled in and never let go of the job. “After that second game,” Blythe said, “I just tried to continue with the same mentality, that it was my job but I wanted to continue to win it, week after week. Now here we are in Super Bowl.”

Presumably, this is just the beginning for the Rams, who is only 26 and who is under contract for the 2019 season at a bargain salary of $720,000.

Blythe could stay at right guard. There’s also the possibility of left guard, should the Rams lose veteran Rodger Saffold to free agency. Then there’s center. John Sullivan’s contract expires after 2019, and line coach Aaron Kromer has hinted that Blythe might be in the Rams’ long-term plans at center.

Blythe continues to cross-train, but not necessarily because he plans a return to his college position.
“I’ve told teammates that, throughout the year, I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve been playing so well thus far,” Blythe said, “is that I understand the center position and I try to understand the game plan every week from that center position. That helps me play faster and more aggressively, more physically, at guard.”

I could see Blythe as the center of the future.
Noteboom as the left tackle of the future.

That means if we re-sign Saffold we only need to draft a future Guard this year to have young and developmental players at all positions on the line

Continuity on the offensive line has been a huge key to Brady's success.
