Yep I thought the same thing watching it this morning. I talked myself into liking the pick last night, but his demeanor at the press conference was wayyyyyyy off.

And the way Snead jumped on every question and Sean looked at him a few times, it seemed like a plan for him to not talk much in there.

I don't want to speculate, but that he said he's going to keep he and Matt's conversation between them......if he called Stafford and then Stafford said "hell yea I get it, we'll make the kid into a star" I have to think McVay shares a version of that. So I'm looking at:

-McVay was clearly pissed during the press conference
-He said he was going to keep their convo between them (which is his go to for difficult situations like Puka or Ernest Jones before him)
-He emphasized it was Matthew's team when he did talk

I almost wonder if Stafford said something like 'I came back to win a Super Bowl, not mentor a kid' - which would seem to be out of character for Matt, but it feels like what that is pointing to
Who is Matt?

Todd McShay, who called the pick, took his victory lap immediately after it was made, too.

He knew something was up due to the fit and that the Rams had done an awfully lot of work on second round WRs.

He said look for either Bama's Germie Bernard or Mississippi's De'Zhaun Stribling tonight.
Please please please let it be Bernard!

Trade up baby trade up! He is so worth it

I’m more than happy to be wrong—hell I freaking hope I’m wrong—but this pick made me think the total opposite. Watching McVay’s reaction and reading all the tea leaves pretty much confirmed it for me. This was Snead setting himself up long term in a post-McVay/Stafford world. Snead will still have his QB of choice on the roster and he’ll be on a rookie deal. Simpson will have gotten a front row seat to McVay and Stafford for 1-2 years and the roster will still have plenty of young talent. Snead won’t have to trade a bunch of picks or assets to find his new QB. Instead he’ll be able to use them on surrounding Simpson with the best talent possible.

The problem is….what if Simpson doesn’t hit? Then you wasted a top 15 pick on someone that is not going to help you win a SB in ‘26 or ‘27, you piss off your franchise QB and head coach in the process, and now you are trying to find your next QB when you are picking 29, 30, 31, or 32.
See the report above. They called Stafford long before the pick and told him they were taking Simpson at 13

They were worried Arizona might jump them otherwise

Sorry, but you are plain wrong. This was not a situation where the owner or GM marched in and said "We are taking him". It was a group decision with McVay at the forefront because they never make any decision on the draft unless it is shared by him and Snead

I’m afraid you are wrong my friend. Snead told Simpson’s father they were going to take him with the 13th pick back in December. Do you think Sean McVay had done any draft prep at that point? Do you think he’d watched a single throw on his tape? No. No way in hell.

This was 1000% Snead’s pick. Did McVay eventually get on board? Sure. But the notion that it was McVay that led the charge for this pick is LAUGHABLE. Snead’s had his mind made up on this guy for 5 months.

But, he didn't say that McVay lead the charge.

I will wait patiently for you to send another post, admitting this comment was bat shit, once McVay contradicts this nonsense himself over the coming days.

Decisions are not made by Snead, per se. They are made in meetings between the scouts, heads of scouting, Snead, McVay, and the coaches, including those who will work with the QBs.

If you believe McVay doesn't have control over decisions, you are deluded

Now, I would argue that decisions are ultimately made by McVay and Snead together which is why neither wants to work with anyone else

It is totally within the wheelhouse of Stafford to pull a Flacco. LOL. Plus your theory makes sense, in terms of explaining McVay`s uncharacteristic attitude.

Technically, they season didn't end until first week of January 2026 -- that's when they knew they had the 13th pick.

How is that possible if Les Snead told Ty Simpson’s father back in December that they were going to take him at 13?

That is what the reporter said, but it is not true. Snead just said that he, Simpson, is a first round QB. He didn`t say, and the Rams will draft him.

How would Snead know the Rams had the 13th pick in December?

But, if that story is true, how did Ty Simpson not know? Wouldn't the dad have told his son?

And even if it is true, McVay still has to get on board with the selection or it doesn't happen.

Besides, while I don't agree with the practice, I've read that players have been told they are going to be selected by teams and passed on only to get upset and vow to get even on the field.

At the presser, he looked like a kid who had waited all year for Christmas morning but got a lump of coal instead. Why not take an elite receiver there that puts this offense over the top - as if they weren't there already? Take another QB later on if you need one. Is Simpson much of an upgrade from Bennett who's been in the system for two years already?
Yes, I'd say Simpson is a big improvement on Bennett. Why are we all so quick to forget that Simpson was the top QB in college until he got hurt in week 9. There are posts on this board talking about getting him but that he'd played himself to the 1.1. So he gets banged up and all the sudden can't play at a high level? Our 1st round pick was Trent McDuffie, Simpson is a gift from Atlanta.

The point still stands. This was a front office decision made months before the head coach got involved in the process.
I think you are confusing "very interested in" and "seriously will consider taking"......with "we are picking you FOR SURE no matter what".

The idea that latter happens and way back in December before any draft evaluations are started by the full team and completed is totally laughable. You are stretching the truth here like a taffy maker.

This pick is fine no matter what happens. Here's the logic:

Jrry said one of my points: McDuffie was our first round pick. He's 25. There are rookies in this draft one taken in the first round who was 25 or turning 25. So we already hit on the pick assuming McDuffie will play well which has a much higher chance of happening than a draft pick.

Simpson will make around the same $ as Jimmy G. He's making backup money for 4 years. We have a solid backup QB.

The remaining players probably would not have made any impact on our team unless the starter above him got injured: WR or OL especially (remember we play a lot of TEs not 3WR). All of the players who could've made any impact were taken before our pick. And this draft class was top heavy everyone was saying it.

If Simpson would've played another year in college and produced stats like 2025 pre injury, he would've been a top 10 pick in 2027 draft.

What if McVay and Stafford are committed to retiring if we win SB or after 2027? Snead (and us) have to think about the future. We aren't going to get to pick a QB next year we will be picking 30-32 range.
