I could only see it if Simpson falls while the Rams are able to trade back a few times and gain multiple 3rd rd picks.

Then maybe they decide to take him in the 20's, IF they really like him, and then would still have 4 more top 100 picks remaining.

I don't know that I would classify Daniel Jeremiah (and I like him) as "plugged-in".

And, I myself am very UN-plugged.

Yeah I guess you're right. He probably doesn't have any contacts in the league. Just hosts a show on NFL Network and is probably the premiere draft analyst.

I guess Blue is not your color.

Seriously though, I think most teams are very careful to not let opponents know their thinking and strategy.

I think it's naive to believe otherwise.

I especially think National Media commentators and analysts are not plugged-in with specific teams, unless there is some prior relationship that has been maintained.

I also think there is room for reasonable speculation ... AND ... that may turn-out to be a team's draft strategy.

In the case of the Rams, Stafford's age makes Quarterback ... and Simpson at #13 ... reasonable to speculate.
As does the lack of depth at WR, making Tate, Tyson, Lemon and Cooper (even the athletic Sadiq) possibilities.

DJ is a very plugged in guy. He worked for 3 or 4 teams as a scout, has been at NFLN 14 or so years and works for the Chargers as well in TV.

  • Accuracy and Precision: Showcases elite ball placement, especially in short-to-intermediate passing games.
  • Quick Release: Possesses a rapid, compact release that allowed him to get the ball out quickly under pressure.
  • High Football IQ: He is a student of the game who could quickly master complex, multi-read playbooks.
  • Mobility: Displayes good athleticism to scramble within the pocket and extend plays.
This report is on another 6-2 QB, also listed at 220, who didn’t have enough college experience for some scouts; there were injury concerns in terms of whether he would hold up in the NFL; and he ended up sliding but was taken in the first round

Who was it? There is another almost identical parallel but that would give it away. Another is it was supposedly a bad year to pick a QB in the first round. No looking on ChatGPT first! Guesses only please :-)

I ask because Ty Simpson put on a clinic in his pro-day. He ticks all of the above boxes; is the son of a coach; and has perhaps the best overall arm talent in this draft. His arm is stronger than scouting reports said. It should get stronger as he gets older. Watch his pro-day highlights. He made all the throws look easy. OK it’s in shorts but his tape shows he is comfortable making decisions under pressure. His tape did get worse second half of the season, but…

He spoke about why his performance dipped across the second half of the season. He spoke about how he’s was playing under 200 as a result of a long term illness brought in by a reaction to medicine; and how he’s back where he needs to be from a physical perspective having added more weight and muscle since the combine

I am starting to believe it would be a mistake to pass on him especially because his skill set fits our system well. I have posted in the past about how he played under Center and has, unlike other QBs, including the de facto no 1 pick, show he can turn his back to play and still do a great job of progressing through his reads quickly, calmly and efficiently

I’m putting it out there, perhaps we should take Simpson at 13 and then turn to C, LB, CB, OT or WR (not necessarily in that order) with our next picks

If Simpson is still there at 13... I would not be surprised if the Rams trade away the pick. I believe there would be several teams hoping to get a shot at him and the Rams can use that leverage to get more picks. Then again... it would not surprise me is the Rams drafted him at 13. The draft is such a crapshoot... I can't wait until it's over and we can start discussing who the Rams actually drafted.

If McVay and Snead think he’s the guy, don’t pull a Bobby Wagner for more picks! :-)

Who do you think the QB is who I discuss above?

See my above post. I agree in principle but only if McVay and Snead decide he’s not their guy. Having watched his pro-day and listened to him, I have one foot in for drafting him at 13. I would be surprised if the Rams don’t have him work out because they must be intrigued if not damn right excited. After all, the plan must have been to take a QB in this years first, right?!

Who do you think QB in question was that i discuss?

Trade down feels like the best way to go this year. I'd like to have another 3rd round pick.

But even if I were to get a trade down offer I like, I still wouldn't take Simpson in the 1st round. Would rather go so many other directions with that pick.

Two weeks ago, draft analysts and gurus were saying how teams, with the exception of those near the top of the draft order, were looking to trade down but there was little to no interest. With Simpson's arguable helium from his pro day and attention from Dan Orlovsky's claim, I suspect the Rams are aiming to capitalize on that. If Snead & McVay are actually interested in Simpson, it makes sense for them to throw out his name among other draft candidates to keep teams guessing, which Sean McVay did during his interview with Kay Adams. If the team prioritizes other prospects ahead of Simpson, it would behoove McSnead to drum up interest from other teams like the QB-needy Jets and Steelers to consider trading up with the Rams to take Simpson, who is the consensus #2 quarterback on the draft board--Orlovsky notwithstanding. I've even seen scenarios where Detroit would trade up with the Rams in order to select an offensive tackle, which I would be fine with unless we're passing on the opportunity to select Monroe Freeling. In any case, it would probably make the most sense for the Rams to subtly fan the flames of the Simpson hype train in an attempt to increase interest and the value of the 13th overall pick.

I half agree with RamDino in suspecting that the Rams are fielding options to trade down to select their top target, depending on the pool of prospects available at #13, while acquiring sought-after additional draft capital whether it's in this year's draft, next or both. Despite acknowledging the real possibility of it happening, I'd be surprised and borderline shocked if the Rams chose to select Simpson for themselves given current priorities, relative team needs and the value of other prospects projected ahead of him.

I agree with Mel Kiper, Jr. in that you only draft Simpson in the first round if you believe he is a franchise quarterback. I've said before that I can see him being a solid NFL QB one day, I just don't see him ever being a top 7 quarterback in the league. Maybe he could sneak in the top 10 in a best-case scenario, but he's more Darnold (at best) than he is Stafford.

Mike Tannenbaum on NFL Draft Daily advocated for Rams to take Simpson at 13. Mike Miller on same panel disagreed and wants Rams to take Lemon. Miller has us taking Allar in 2nd. Conversely, Tannenbaum feels Rams can still get a good receiver in 2nd Round.
