[wrapimg=left]http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/nfl-getty1.jpg?w=150[/wrapimg]Last month, the NFL’s owners tabled until May a variety of proposed changes, including the expansion of the offseason rosters from 80 to 90 players per team.

On Monday, out of the blue, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello announced on Twitter that, as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the roster limit officially will be expanded.

It means that another 320 players will get a chance to win a job on the 53-man roster via their efforts during a truncated offseason program and a less intense training camp. (It also means that another 320 players will have the chance to say “no, thanks” to an invitation to play pro football — and none will.)

It’s unclear how the change was made apart from the confines of an ownership meeting. It’s possible that a vote was taken electronically or by phone, or that some other approval process was used, given that the change technically will be made to a bylaw, not a formal rule.

As explained by Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay last month, the increase from 80 to 90 will result in a decrease from 90 to 80 players after the third preseason game and a drop from 80 to 53 after the final preseason game, which will flood the market with 864 players less than a week before the first game of the season.

What they should do is add 5 to 10 to the active roster.

Yep, all the talk of player safety, adding 5-10 players on the active roster could allow coaches to better rotate guys who may have some bumps and bruises that would otherwise play through them. At least in my opinion.

I'm totally with you. The other thing is that they should be able to dress whoever is on the active roster. That's total crap that some don't get to dress/play. They really should change that rule as well.

Agree with all of you. Its amazing that fans can figure this out and full time employees of the NFL cannot. It makes total sense so what could possibly be a hold up for this? Any explanation at all?

Probably like any other business, head count rules. A company will spend $10 mil on some equipment but will fight tooth and nail to keep from keeping 4 extra workers around to help things run smoother.

I'd love to see the NFL at least bump the roster up to 55 and dress all of them on Sundays.

Exactly. So we get to see 10 more unlikely faces have their 15 minutes. No offense to them but....

I also agree that this idea of not being able to dress the whole roster is bullshit.

Since the purpose of inactive players is to prevent healthier teams from having an advantage over those with players out with injuries, why not allow the teams themselves (say the Rams vs Lions on Week 1) to decide how many active players both teams can field (not less than the current minimum)?

That is, if the Lions have 2 players that can't play out of their 53 and the Rams have none, then on Sunday morning both teams can agree to have 51 players active.

Now some people might worry about gamesmanship over the injury lists, but what HC is going to not play a player who can perform?
