Guys were on the same team almost for life back then. You could build a team and not lose the experienced talent to FA.
Money aside, I sometimes think that it was better from a team building standpoint that way. If you built an O line for example, it stayed intact for years. And of course, teams could still just trade for what they needed, too. "Trader" George always traded younger guys for the more experienced players when he ran the show with Don Klosterman.
Today you can buy the talented pieces that you need to improve at a spot. Back before FA, you sometimes drafted for a certain position.
Now it's generally drafting the BPA.
I dunno.
I guess I go back and forth with this line of thinking.
