No no . Keep fowler and Houston we are already losing Suh so we don't need to lose another. Both guys can play both sides and that's huge

With Goff pending his big contract it's crucial that they line up the right guys in terms of who they're paying. Houston ain't the right guy. This draft is loaded with DL and edge types, use the strength of the draft and let other teams invest in future dead cap signings.

Because he was released before FA, I do not believe it affects draft compensation.
Good point, Snead is ahead of the curve in considerations like this. Still, my guess is that the Rams won’t be willing to outbid for Houston

I suspect he'll get offered too much for the Rams' budget - but it's still good for the Rams. He can take a high bidding team off the market, so the Rams can find a bargain elsewhere.

To me, Weddle seems like a classic brilliant move by McSnead. Weddle’s football smarts are off the charts, he just made another Pro Bowl, supposedly DC’s have to game-plan for him, won’t count toward FA compensation, area of great need (especially given recent communication problems in secondary), considered like a “Whitworth for the secondary,” and lastly, a relative bargain at 6.25 M avg per year.

IMHO, Houston doesn’t check as many boxes. Main problem is the cost/benefit ratio.

Weddle reminds me of the Talib signing—experienced vet that can improve entire D. Houston would remind me of a lesser version of the Suh signing— declining player whose value will not match his salary.

But hey, I’m just guessin’...

Actually think the opposite. Because he was released before FA, I do not believe it affects draft compensation. He'll probably already talked to Snead. My fear is that the Niners will offer him more because they can.
If the Niners were smart they should spend the next couple years building their roster with young talent. Things can change rather quickly in the NFL but there they are in serious need of WRs, LBs and CBs. They have some nice DL players.

That’s cheap. He would of been the 20th highest paid safety at that price last season. Deal is for 2 years $10.5M with only $5.25M guaranteed.

Last year he was better than Joyner. He will be cheaper than Joyner and won’t count against the rams comp pick formula.

PFF has him rated as the 18th best safety overall. I personally think his leadership will be huge for us.

Am I the only one who'd rather have Fowler back?
Without considering anything other than potential, sure. I'm guessing Fowler will require at least $20 million more in guaranteed money and will also cost the Rams a potential 2020 3rd round comp pick. Once you factor in the other costs, Houston on a one or two year deal is a better value and carries a lot less risk.

Great point I hadn't considered.
