JT Chat Highlights

—You’re assuming then that Clowney goes to Houston. Then, I say the Rams try to trade out, but if stuck it’s Robiinson/Matthews.

—Top Positions of Need? Secondary (both safety and corner), offensive line (tackle and guard), wide receiver.

—There’s certainly an element of risk with Clowney. I’ve had more than enough NFL people tell me how talented he is, but many still have reservations on his motor, maturity, etc. If he’s there at No. 2, and the Rams think that highly of him, then take him.

—Actually, Barrett Jones worked a lot at guard on the practice field last year. Tim Barnes can also play guard. But if the Rams draft Matthews or Robinson, they could very well play guard for a year or two. Zack Martin could also play guard. The Rams have also had Joel Bitioniio of Nevada and Billy Turner of North Dakota State in for pre-draft visits _ and they could be guard prospects.

—Boudreau is an excellent o-line coach, but it would be a big learning curve. Because Auburn didn’t pass much. And Robinson is an underclassmen.

—Glad you brought up Gabe Jackson. Although I’m unaware of any pre-draft visit by him (I’m missing about a half-dozen names) I know the Rams did express interest in him at the Senior Bowl. He could fill a need at guard.

—Rams are sold on Bradford for at least 2014. I kind of like Murray.

—I would be happy with either Matthews or Robinson, although I think Matthews is more NFL ready. And you make an interesting point on Watkins. Obviously, the Rams will throw the ball more with Bradford at QB, but we all expect it to be a run-oriented offense.

—Well, they are looking at quite a few WRs. Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin and Bruce Ellington either visited or had visits scheduled. Watkins teammate at Clemons, Martavis Bryant, was part of the private workout with Watkins last weekend. And I’m sure there are some WRs they’re looking at that I don’t know about. So to me, all of that shows that they’re certainly considering one, just maybe not at No. 2 overall.

—This is the last week of visits. The maximum is 30. By the end of last week they had a couple of spots left. Maybe one of those went to Dominique Easley, the DT from Florida, who scheduled to be in this week. Another may have went to Jason Verrett, the corner from TCU who’s in this week. I know originally _ or at least as of a week or so ago _ he had not been scheduled to visit. So he could’ve taken one of those slots.

—As a rookie, Clowney could be a pass-rush specialist. And under Fisher, the Rams have used three and four defensive ends in passing situations. And the better the Rams are _ i.e., leading in more games, etc. _ the more you’d have the opposition in predictable passing situations. Clowney did do some LB work at South Carolina’s pro day, although many think his talent is being wasted if he’s not playing with his hand on the ground.

—There’s obviously some interest or they wouldn’t bring Mack in for a visit. I don’t know if I can see it at No. 2 overall though.

—I think the biggest intrigue in the draft is what happens to the QBs _ Bortles, Bridgewater, and Manziel.

—That’s one reason the cap was tight this year, and the base salaries of Chris Long and James Laurinaitis lower significantly after this year. Kevin Demoff planned it that way to make room for re-signing the young players on the roster when and if the time comes for extensions.

—Well, re-signing Saffold certainly helps the o-line. But to me the biggest disappointment of free agency was that the Rams didn’t sign a cornerback or safety in free agency to give them a veteran presence back there. As for Bradford, it’s hard to restructure with just two years left on the contract. And for the Bradford camp, why restructure/extend when you’re coming off a year when you missed 9 games. That’s not exactly bargaining from a position of strength.

—Tre Mason? I haven’t heard a peep on the Rams and any RBs. But I wouldn’t be shocked if they took one at some point in the draft. The hard-running Mason does seem like a Fisher-type back.

—To me Lamarcus Joyner is the most intriguing of the group you mentioned. He could also play nickel corner. I don’t think the Rams have showed much interest in Ward and Bucannon.

—Actually offensive tackle isn’t a deep group this year. I think you better get one in the first couple of rounds if you want one.

—Odds of the Rams selecting a defensive player in the first round are…75%

—No, I don’t know why the Zack Martin visit was cancelled. It could be that the Rams already knew enough about Martin and that he has a clean slate as far as injuries and off-field stuff. When all is said and done, I think Jake Matthews may not visit Rams Park either. His record is so pristine and they certainly know enough about him. And again, they’re running out of visits.

"Stuck" with a guy who'll start for us for about a decade... I'm 100% good with that.

If you assume the odds of us taking a defensive player vs an offensive player are 50/50 then the odds of us going offence offence are 25%, leaving the odds that we select a defensive player as 75%. The 50/50 is either his way of saying he has no idea which way the Rams will go with their picks, or he's just plucking numbers out of his ass as he usually does.

He didn't say with the first pick, just the first round, but I agree 50/50. It could easily be OT/WR just like it could be DE/CB.

I say 100% chance we take a defensive player in round 1.
