I am about as ambivalent about this as is possible tbh. Decent backup but I think there are better out there.
Not to be a wise guy ... but ... Who?

As far as I have seen, the best of the remaining free agent quarterbacks are Tyrod Taylor and Cooper Rush; and I would prefer Garoppolo to either of them.

I may be in the minority, but I'd be fine with a rook like Simpson/Nuss backing up this year. We will save a good amount of $ that can be used elsewhere.
I see it the same. Also if we lose Stafford for any length of time, then a rookie losing games is fine by me, because it will put us higher in a very good QB draft.

Cooper Rush?
Hell, we might as well re-sign Brett Rypien.

The point of a vet QB2 isn't to insure against losing Stafford for a lot of time or the playoffs. It's to guard against losing #9 for 5-6 games, while keeping the playoff hopes and positioning alive.

A rook may not be able to do that.

Stafford has also indicated multiple times that he REALLY appreciated that Jimmy G was able to help the team with installs etc. when he was out last summer with his back. That's the only reason that I can see why they would potentially overpay for Jimmy G.

Rather have a rookie then either. Rypien should not be drawing checks from a NFL team.

May not, but any available vet may not either. I'd rather see a rookie out there then a terrible vet.

I wouldn't consider Jimmy G a terrible vet. I think he'd be able to keep the team afloat for a short period of time.

Don't you believe in feel good stories, man?
John Cappelletti?
Brian's Song?
Wounded Rocky Bleier?
Kurt Warner!?!?

Maybe the next feel good story will be Garoppolo!!! :)
They might even do a movie staring Tom Brady as Jimmy g and Sydney Sweeney as the pornstar he got with.

WOW - maybe you should be a director. How much do you know about Porn.

I’m sure when you were young you must have been able to sneak into all those Triple XXX Rate Movies around LA ? Starting playing at an early age.

There’s options.

Rumors are rumors.IMO The Rams need to bring in extra arms. It’s time to start to develop a QB to protect against bringing in a whole New QB room.

I like Mac Jones a little,or Richardson maybe in 2027 to compete. What’s Stetson future ?

HORRIBLE thinking, but then again Merlin it’s you.Keep kicking tires.

Like that is going to happen- LOl
If Jimmy G doesn’t get resigned The Rams already have a backup QB who has been in the system going on 4 years.IMO the work put in has to equate to something.

Yes - The Rams will bring in a QB for OTA’s no matter what. They need arms.Stafford might be limited in his throws. Over the years there’s been issues.Monitoring him seems like a smart idea, especially if it’s not his arm, hand, shoulder, back ? He isn’t a spring Ram(chicken) anymore.

There are other options out there as well for moving forward.Just don’t think it’s LOSS & start a Rookie QB because you think there might be some kind of future in him ? That fills up happy Ram Fans right away, lining up to buy tickets.

This is very true - I have always had a hard time getting past it.

But I'm also just not a believer in the talent level, to be honest. He was the real weakness in that loaded San Fran team, was he not?

He may be able to keep us in a game or two - but if Stafford was not there for the playoffs, he doesn't feel like the guy who would be able to take us the distance, does he? Most backups aren't - I know.
Great assessment.
I don’t think most people look at it that way though—he was the weak link. They see the 8-0 record and the SB appearance. If the 9ers felt he was good enough, then why the ridiculous draft capital spent to move up for a QB and then basically hand the job to to him. Had Jimmy not taken a pay cut the Rams would never have had their opportunity for revenge in the playoffs.

Folks need to let that part sink in:
The 9ers wanted to dump Jimmy g for an unproven trey lance, despite the 9ers making it to the SB with jimmy g.

Odd that we didn't get leaks of G's thoughts of retirement during the Cardinals rumors - not saying he's not actually thinking of retirement now. . . .

Regardless, safe to presume that, as a vet, G has little/no interest in any offseason conditioning/OTA/camp activities, by any team.
It could also be that he doesn’t want to go through that rigamorale UNLESS he’s gonna start. Apparently, no teams are seeing him that way right now.

He can skip camp, etc. and just wait it out. Sooner or later a QB will go down and his phone will ring.

And then ratboy kept calling designed run plays so Lance could get injured and he could reinstate Jimmy back as the starter so they could start winning again.

Free agency isnt the only way to get a backup QB. We dont know who "could" be available in a trade, or who will be cut. Guys like Aiden O'Connell from the Raiders, Spencer Rattler Saints, Davis Mills could be available due to crowded QB rooms. Not advocating for any of them necessarily, just saying that FA isnt the only way
