I was watching a replay of the WC game against the Panthers. The Rams own the 1st half and are up by 10, 17 to 7. Near the end of the half, around 6 minutes left, the Rams have a 4th and 3 from around the 20. They can go up by 13. The kicker has missed 1 kick since they acquired him. McVay goes for it and fails. From that point on the Panthers are a different team. They tie the score before half time and the Rams barely pull it out with less than 40seconds in the game.
When you have a team down don't get greedy. take the points. Your momentum stays with you and above all you haven't given the momentum away. It would be great to go up by 3 scores, but what do you risk. I am not saying play it safe no matter what, but the coach has to ask himself. Is what I gain worth the risk. McVay has gotten a little carried away with it. He needs to put his mindset back a few years when he had a reliable kicker. He got into a bad habit compensating for the kicking game. This isn't the only time I think it didn't make sense to take the risk.
