I would have shot him dead. Terrible event, but you break in to another man's home you take the risk the owner is armed and has a functioning pair of balls.

It would still be a tragedy, nonetheless. Martin has struggled with mental health, and as of now, we don't know if he was violent to the homeowners, if the homeowners were even there, or even if he knew if it was someone else's house. It has happened before where people think that another house/apartment is theirs at night and think they locked themselves out, and I don't think those people should be shot dead for a mistake. Burglars and home invasion people? Absolutely, lethal force would be more than justified, but I don't believe that an accident should be punished with death.

His family called the police hoping to get him to inpatient help, most likely. They didn't call the police to kill him while he was in their custody. I know that it's too early to put blame on anyone, but there are so many ways to subdue a mentally ill person without killing them, sometimes without violence, no matter their size and strength. De-escalation, first and foremost, should be what police try to do in a mental-health emergency; that's literally what their training specifies. De-escalation, warnings, then tasers/mace, then physical force, and unless it's in a situation where lives are at risk, lethal force should be the last option.

"Excuse me sir. Before I shoot you, are you a full fledged burgler attempting to rob my home, or just a confused neighbor trying to get into the wrong house mistakenly?"

I don't think it works that way...

I know it doesn't. There've been too many stories, though, where people have entered the wrong house by mistake and people have died for it when they shouldn't have.

To quote the Grey Wizard, Gandalf, "Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Do not be eager to deal out death and judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

This should probably be left alone until there are true details as to EXACTLY what happened. I’ll leave the thread open for now but be kind to each other and please respect those affected by this tragic event.

Cheers.

Dude was crazy and was lucky the homeowner did not take him out before the cops got there.
I think they said mentally Ill. which a very serious issue especially with football players.
And no mentally ill and crazy don't mean the same thing.
He was probably on something.
Couldn't read the rest of post, the beginning was so off base
Why even post negative comments on something ,
when you have nota clue whatsoever, What truly happened.

Yup, money always makes it better and resolves all issues involved…..but cool story.

Accountability matters.

If he had something like a cardiac event happen and the response was appropriate and he just simply couldn’t be saved, that’s one thing. But if that’s not the case, they are a professional organization and he became their responsibility once he was in their custody. They have a duty to act and respond appropriately.

So now the police killed him in their custody?

Merlin, I'm going off of what his agent said. He was in their custody. He died in their custody. I worded it wrong, but they were responsible for his health and wellbeing the second he was in their custody.

Speaking as a gal who has struggled with mental health episodes, I feel for Martin and his family. If Martin died in custody of police (especially during a mental health crisis), the appropriate parties should be sued for everything they're worth.
I want to completely agree but I think it's premature to start any lawsuit talk before an investigation and especially the autopsy report are done.

I completely agree with you on the investigation and autopsy before lawsuits. I just want both to be independent, if possible, so that there are no mistakes.

I’m going to lock this until and unless there is anything concrete to add. If you have anything, feel free to DM me with the info and I’ll research it and add it if appropriate.
