Sure looks like there's a chance hes back for the playoffs, but man if we rush him back too soon it would be devastating for him to get reinjured. I hope we dont risk it, he just barely turned 22 in July. Let him take it slow and get back healthy for a full camp. Hendo and Sony should be fine for us this yr.

Is there a chance we can get this dude back for a playoff run?

I think the season-ending IR rule means the player is out for the postseason as well.

Couldn't find 100% confirmation of this, but I think that's the rule.
I just found this which seems to indicate that he can not be brought back since he was placed on IR before September 1st... officially they placed him on IR on August 31st from what I can tell. So essentially they have to make the final roster to be eligible to return via new IR rules.

Only players on the 53-man roster after Sept. 1 are eligible to be designated for return from IR or the non-football injury list, Pelissero added.

He's going to need months of rehab. There was no way he was going to be back this season regardless which is why they didn't wait to IR him. Functional use and playing strength are not the same particularly for a RB which is why their longterm prognosis is generally poor.

Um.... ok. Maybe the IR rules don't apply once playoffs are reached and he could be brought back then? Idk anymore after this....

Wow!! This is huge news. Cam Akers (possibly) in the postseason?!?!?
One (and the only one) physical therapy site I went to said that doing everything right you could return to normal activities in 4-6 months. He tore it in July. I don't remember hearing how bad it was, but if it wasn't really bad and he's doing everything right (and they're right about the NFL rules), maybe he can actually make a complete recovery and be back for the playoffs. I'd hate to see him come back too early and either be useless or get hurt again, but it would sure be nice to have him.

Yeah I was looking at some of those sites and saw the same thing. Regardless, I'll trust the Rams' medical staff to make a smart call on this. (I will NOT trust them to be forthcoming and give us much info, though. They wouldn't even confirm whether or not Cam had surgery, nor what type of surgery it was!)

Gotta say Cam looked fantastic on that Oct. 21 video. If he is looking that strong and quick on Oct. 21, then it wouldn't surprise me that he could *possibly* be ready for the playoffs in 3 months.

IIRC, Jourdain Rodrigue confirmed that Cam had surgery shortly after his injury on July 20. So if Cam were to attempt to be ready for a divisional playoff game on January 22/23, that would be almost exactly 6 months of recovery time.

Bringing Cam back would be a huge calculated risk. But if the trainers give it the ok, I could definitely see the Rams taking that risk.

Still amazed that the 'new' IR rules would even allow for the possibility of Cam coming back in postseason... would love to hear more confirmation of this!

I have been impressed with what Hendo has given us from staying healthy, pass blocking and some hard running but the dude just does not have anything close to Akers vision. Would be awesome to get him back given that he's healthy.

Rams getting Akers back would be insane. I almost don't dare to hope. It would make this offense significantly harder to stop.

Imagine you are him, Kurt. Poised to have an epic season with this unit and get cheated out of it by injury. Then you heal fast enough to join them for the playoffs...

If I'm him there is zero chance I pass on that opportunity. The team isn't the only ones who would want that.

Yea I'm with you, I'd rather be conservative and safe with him healing because he is so young still. But man if we make the NFCC game or SB and he's pretty much ready to roll it will be hard for McVay to say no.

Just read Jourdain's article, and it sounds like Cam is 100% on board with attempting to come back for the playoffs. As McVay himself said about the possibility: "Holy shit" !

That is true but for normal use, i.e. walking, standing, light jogging. That is not the same as football shape especially playing RB. Look at the research for football players. It takes 4-6 months to get to the aforementioned state. It takes close to 6 more months of PT to strengthen enough to play football.

Even then the vast majority suffer performance loss and most are out of the NFL within 3 years. Why do you think they traded for Michel? Sony is a long-term option to Akers. I doubt Akers gets a second contract.

The way they are using Henderson is much the same way they over-used Gurley. Sean obviously hasn't learned from Gurley. If he keeps playing Henderson like he is, he will be all beat up by the postseason. This next stretch of mediocre teams is a good opportunity to see what they have or don't have in their backup RBs. Howell lacks breakaway speed but has decent speed and can be a chain mover. Hawkins has good speed but is a small RB. He has shown good agility, and decent power for a back his size. Durability might be a concern with him as the only major issue of concern. If he can return KOs that would be a huge plus.
