Cleveland Browns LT Joe Thomas expects the Lions' defense to show a little more than Rams "who just stood there''

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns left tackle Joe Thomas expects a little more from the Lions' defense tonight at FirstEnergy Stadium than he got from the Rams last week.

"They were about as vanilla as you possibly could be last week, so it wasn’t a challenge at all figuring what we needed to do because they just stood there for us,'' Thomas said. "We're going to be playing a few more snaps than we did last time and we're going to see a little more complex defense."

Last week, the Lions held the Jets to just 37 yards rushing in a 26-17 Detroit victory, and No. 5 overall pick Ziggy Ansah intercepted a Mark Sanchez pass and returned it 14 yards for a touchdowns.

The Browns, meanwhile, put up 10 point in two series with quarterback Brandon Weeden at the helm. Weeden completed 10 of 13 attempts for 112 yards and a touchdown en route to a 27-19 victory over the Rams.

"Obviously we’re going to get a different look at the defense, and it’s going to be interesting to see how we’re able to adjust when they bring a pressure or they play a different coverage or they do something that you’re going to see in a regular NFL game," said Thomas. "So it's trying to keep making progress and keep churning along."

That's not to say Thomas thinks the Lions will be exotic tonight. Afterall, the two teams meet up again on Oct. 13 here.

"Well, they will be vanilla, but [hilite]they'll be less vanilla then they were last week[/hilite],'' said Thomas. "So instead of zero pressures and zero coverage changes we may get one out of every four plays, so neither team really game plans much, but they’re going to show a little bit more of their defense. We’re gonna probably show a little bit more of our offense. It’s just kind of baby steps at this point in the preseason.''

[hilite]Rams coach Jeff Fisher acknowledged he didn't show much at all against the Browns.[/hilite]

"Yes, we stayed very basic and that was our intention," Fisher said after the game. "The first preseason game is never an indication of where you're at because there are so many things going on."

Lions coach Jim Schwartz told reporters in Detroit that the teams squaring off again in the regular season is a factor.

“That does come up,” he said. “There’s things that you sort of feel like you like against a defensive scheme or an offensive scheme that you don’t want to show. But over the course of the season, you’re going to show all those things anyway. The main thing is execution. You want guys communicating well, executing, and you want to see — and I’ve said this a bunch of times in preseason games — you want to see players win not scheme win.”

Pretty much what most of us were saying, also why I wasn't worried about the lack of pressure from our front four.

Not sure if he means they, as in the individual D-lineman, weren't trying to get pressure or if he's just talking about how they weren't showing anything so they didn't try any exotic movements, etc? To me, it looked like the D-lineman were trying to get to the QB but they just manhandled and couldn't generate any pressure without a blitz of some kind.

Lol... If we just stood around and the browns were playing their hearts out... Why wasnt the score lopsided then? Kinda says a lot about how bad the browns are going to be...

Maybe Coach Fisher is trying to prevent any serious injuries in the preseason by playing very vanilla play calling schemes...?

Yes. Also, not showing how we will use our weapons. We will be very basic this preseason. You'll see all the tricks start to unfold starting with Arizona.

This is why I didn't really worry about it. I'm pretty sure once the regular season comes around it'll be back to the norm, sacking fools.

Fisher is playing poker. You can't let your whole D "just stand there" but you can let your line loaf and that's what he did. From camp reports the week leading up to the Browns game, the comment was made that the D didn't seem energized and the O was getting a bit of a groove on. I say that was all by design and was the gameplan. Fisher knows what he has with his D line. He needs to see his rookies in the back make some plays. Brilliant!

That's where it pays to have a veteran coach who knows what he's doing. Fisher doesn't give a damn about sending messages to fans or anything, he cares about fundamentals and staying healthy.

That's just brutal, and I hate when injuries happen to anyone, but especially my team.

Fisher has his system, and his philosophy, is it perfect, or the right one? Injuries don't seem to have an agenda to me, but I've had my share, and most of them happened when my balls were to the wall.

Joe Thomas is one of those guys that just "gets it" isn't he? Too base he plays for the Cleveland Turds.

We did the same thing last pre-season on each side of the ball. He just doesn't want to show anything. Something I have no problem with at all.

just read somewhere that no push from DL would make it would be easier to evaluate your rookie LB and DB . Maybe that is what Fisher was doing?

RhodyRams with an interesting tidbit:

That's an interesting thought. What do you do as a defense if the opposition O-line is handling your D-line. Problem is, what can you learn when you aren't doing the things that can compensate for that like blitzing? Plus I don't think you learn very much DB wise when you give huge cushions to the WRs. Still, it's something to roll around in my brain.

Plenty of room there.

I dont know about no push helping evaluate...because there will be push when it matters. It would almost be like playing 7 on 7.. Which is tough on the D...with a timed rush instead of real people rushing.

If you want to put them on the spot and at a disadvantage sure not rushing the Dline would do that.
