There is no difference, when it comes to the draft, between QBs and the other positions on the team. You're still swimming against the math the further down in the draft order you go. A point he alluded to when he said this: "Bad news is that it is insanely unlikely that you find a guy like that at all...much less later in the draft." That is true at every position.

While I can't speak for anyone else on this board, I'm pretty sure that nobody is saying your draft strategy can't work out great for your team. The problem remains that when you go against the math your chances of being successful are less than when you draft with the math in mind. That might not show up in this draft or the next draft but over the long run the math will catch up to you. You might occasionally get that card you're looking for to fill that inside straight but you better believe that great poker players always love to play against players with your mind set. What do all great poker players have in common? They play the percentages. That is true for most things in life.

I love the poker player analogy. The best poker players fold more than anything else. They don't chase flushes and certainly inside straights. (y)

I disagree. Some of the richest players go broke. A good portion of these guys are admitted to colleges that they never could qualify to attend if they were not athletes. There are enough that are not intelligent enough to manage the money that they should be paying into a retirement, or have some sort of backup plan. The NFL helps create the situation, they should take more responsibility for these guys lives.
IRAs don't make much sense for people with salaries as high as NFL players. They wouldn't qualify for the tax advantage of them. But I agree the NFL should provide a retirement option for them such as a 401k. They know a percentage of their players are not the sharpest tools in the box and didn't belong in college were it not for their athleticism.

Yeah, my wifes cousin was a tutor at UNC. She said some of the athletes had trouble reading.

Ramhusker with this:

I agree with much of what you say here but I think you're not listing all the advantages to them having IRAs. That same comment about some of them not being the sharpest tools could also used to support the establishment of IRAs. I would think they would look at IRA money in a different way than the rest of their money. I know the rest of us do.

I blew up my 401K and am now investing all of my money into my kids Utah 529.
I figured sending them to Harvard Law and letting them take care of me is the best retirement plan

Sorry for the off topic but a traditional (not Roth IRA) would make sense being you would be taxed at the income rate at the time you (cashed it in) Usually when retired and income is at a much decreased level. You are right that neither a roth nor a traditional IRA would come into play as a way to offset income as they seldom do.

Now just sign for a fair rate Barks and lets get this O Line straightened out

I wonder what Barksdale is thinking right about now. Is he injured or something?

It's hard to imagine that he's going to get more money the closer we get to the NFL Draft.

Maybe his agent is telling him to wait for camp and hope someone gets a major injury. I still don't see how that adds up to a big payday houghton. Most teams are close to the cap by then.
