When Merlin joked with me about Farrah Faucett, it reminded me of a poster that I had of her fellow co-star Jaqueline Smith on Charly's Angels tv show. I kept it for years on my wall. Later, I had posters of Pat Benatar and Teri Nunn of Berlin.

But there were knick knacks that I loved. I had a blue wax figurine of Frankenstein's monster from Universal Studios (pressed in a machine). I think I also had a crushed penny by a machine. My parents bought me a tin (?) metal sailing ship that I would think is cheap today, but nothing bought in Solvang was all that cheap. I also had my beloved catcher's mitt and Dodger's cap. I had a kid's size Rams blue and white horns helmet. When we moved to Texas at 12 years old, I became a Robert E Howard fan and read every Conan the Barbarian book I could find. I also collected Marvel Comics back when they were good and still have them today.

How about you guys? What were your cherished things as a kid?

My scooter. Dad got it for me in an ice storm for Christmas. 1999 or 2000...somewhere in there.

I was more into Kate Jackson. I had a brown transistor radio that I used to tape to the handlebars of my bike and ride around the neighborhood listening to those tunes of the 70s. A Rams pillowcase from 1980 which I still have today. Those are just a couple.

Oh, and tons of Star Wars Figures.

I still have my original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back pillowcase and sheets. Will pass those down to the little Faulkers when they’re old enough to appreciate those movies.

Good lord, I’m going to have to teach them why that was so popular in pop culture like 10 years ago too. I feel old.

My favorite toy as a kid was probably a set of wooden blocks. Different shapes and sizes, built forts and knocked over plastic army men with rubber bands. They all fit in a wooden box that had wheels on it. Had it for years, went looking for something like it a few years ago for my granddaughter but couldn’t find anything like it in the marketplace.

I still have all my comic books from the 60's and 70's. The rest was pretty much lost when my estranged sister moved our mother into assisted living and I'm sure she tossed it.

This is something that kids today place ZERO value on. But back in the stone ages when I was growing up, these really did have real meaning and almost seemed priceless. They also provided real life lesson reminders every time you took a moment to look at them. That is... if you ever were able to earn one because they couldn't just be purchased.

My sports trophies. I still have all of mine and they are proudly displayed right now on the top shelf behind my bar. In ancient times you only got one if your team came in 1st place.

I don't have very many because it was fucking hard to come in 1st place. That is one of the reasons they meant so much back then and still mean something to me today. I also have a couple of my old individual sports awards displayed behind the bar too.

One of the items that I cherished like a mad man was something I got when I was in 1st grade and I was able to keep it until my senior year of HS. It was a small Kane (pronounced KA NAE) carving/idol. It was carved out of a piece of black compressed lava rock and had what looked like blood red 1 carat diamonds (they were shaped just like a traditional engagement ring diamond) for it's eyes. It was a little bigger than a matchbox car... so it was small, but it had great detail.

You can look up Kane in Hawaiian history if you are really interested. Basically Kane is a protector and scares off evil or your enemies. The Hawaiians use to carve big tikis of his head with scary teeth and put them up around the outside of their villages/homes. At night they would always light a fire behind them or put a burning torch behind them to make their eyes look like fire... because the eyes would be a fully carved hole through the tiki. They look very intimidating for sure. That's why mine had those red "diamond" eyes. They looked badass against the jet black rock that rest of it was made of.

I kept that thing with me or in my car all the time. I used to tell my friends in HS when I got back to the Mainland that it protected me and those around me. My friends really started to believe that it really had protective powers because I drove like an idiot back then and never got a ticket or got into an accident. They would literally start asking for it when I'd start driving too fast or stupid. They just called it the idol.

I would still have it today but I'm positive that one of my HS "friends" stole it out of my car. I still get mad thinking about not still having it because I kept it with me for so long. That's why several years ago when I went back to The 808 I got myself a real Kane tiki that is carved out of milo wood. That wood used to be reserved only for Hawaiian royals. The Hawaiian who carved it wasn't going to sell it to me until I showed him that I have a Hawaiian social security number and proved to him that I was a "local". It's big and cost me a lot just to ship the beast back to O-Town. I have 4 led lights behind it that look like burning torches and it's doing the protecting for me now. Still miss my old little one though.

When I was a kid, I loved playing with playdo/clay. Would start out as different colors but ultimately would all get mixed together it become a giant mound of greenish-brown. Would leave it in an old Savarin Coffee can.
I spent hours upon hours playing with that stuff, and put a lot of detail in to it. Id not only make a car, but I'd make an engine for it.
Big Speed Racer fan, and I'd make the Mach 5, also loved the Lotus Esprit from the Spy who Loved me and would make that too.
One day a couple years back, my daughter asked me to help her with her school project, she had to make a dinosaur from clay.
Brought back a lot of memories. Wasnt my best work but it was fun making it.

how many here remember when we still only had 3 channels on the TV and had a large antenna mounted on the roof of our house , and every time we wanted to change channels , not only did we have to get out of our chairs to change the channel , we also had to change the direction of the antenna using directional box sitting on the top of our TV , I still have ours , and it still works ,

normally it sits on top of our 60 inch flat screen TV in the living room , just for show ............lol

I had a thing for diecast metal aircraft and spaceships. I'd use them with the green army men to wage battles and shit. But the diecast metal toys were something. You can't really get those today, as most toys like that are plastic. And as I got older and went into the military and ended up working on aircraft my fascination for some of those old airframes remained.

The old P-38. The Mustang. Even the zero. The aircraft of WWII in particular had a real beauty to them I think. So many great looking airframes. My favorite was probably the Spitfire.
