I want Reid to succeed so badly. But, looking over our talent pool for DBs, he may be left out. I can't be honest with myself for plugging him in the roster over anyone else. Hopefully he blows camp out of the water and makes it. Impressive talent in the secondary compared to a year ago. Needs some fast development first, though.
I like Reid alot and hope he makes it. Probably his best chance to win a spot is on special teams with kick return duties.

With all the prediction threads that have been posting, I would like to propose taking a little different approach to it. Seems everyone has their opinion on what the 53 man roster could and should look like, but how about trying to project the 46 man "ACTIVE" roster that takes into account who the core special team guys will be.

I found a rather interesting article about "Roster construction" and they go so far as breaking it down to how most teams approach deciding on the 46 man game day roster. I realize it's from Bleacherreport, but this actually is one of their better pieces.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1640782-the-anatomy-of-a-53-man-roster-in-the-nfl

My 46 man Game day "active" roster"

Offense (21)
QB: (2) Bradford; Hill
RB: (3) Stacy; Mason; Pead
TE: (3) Cook; Kendricks; Harkey
WR: (5) Austin; Britt; Quick; Givens; Pettis
OL: (8) Long; Robinson; Wells; Saffold; Barksdale; Barnes; Joseph; Jones

Defense (22)
DL: (8) Quinn; Long; Hayes: Sims; Brockers; Langford; Donald; Sam
LB: (6) Laurinaitis; Ogletree; Dunbar; Armstrong; Bates; Steward
DB: (8) Jenkins; Johnson; Joyner; McDonald; McLeod; Davis; Alexander; Gaines;

Specialists (3)
K: Zuerlien P: Hekker LS: McQuaide

Special Teams:
Kickoff Team:
Zuerlein; Pead; Gaines; McLeod; Joyner; Davis; Alexander; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Sam

Kickoff Return:
Davis; Alexander; Sam; Steward; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Jones; Barnes; Harkey; Mason

Punt Coverage:
Pead; McGee; Alexander; Sims; Bates; McQuaide; Armstrong; Sam; Harkey; Davis; Hekker

Punt Return: Austin; Jenkins; Johnson; Joyner; Davis; Ogletree; Armstrong; Bates; Sims; Donald; Steward
After carefully comparing your picks to mine, I'm proud to say I'm only 2 picks off perfection. I have Cunningham instead of Pead, and Reid instead of McLeod. BUT I'm sure that's because your picks have better value in ST! I'm still Learning from you Coach!:D

I agree. But, there could be something about picking him and Joyner both up. It adds to the list of guys we take from the same team.

Reid and Joyner
Tavon and Stedman
G.Rob and Tre
the Auburn LBers

Offense (22)
QB: (2) Bradford; Hill
RB: (4) Stacy, Mason, Cunningham, Pead
TE: (3) Cook, Kendricks, Harkey
WR: (5) Austin, Britt, Quick, Givens, Bailey/Pettis (cut w/return of Bailey)
OL: (8) Long, Robinson, Wells, Saffold, Barksdale. Bond, Joseph, Jones/Barnes can't pick one till I see them....

Defense (21)
DL: (8) Quinn, Long, Hayes, Sims, Brockers, Langford, Donald, Carrington
LB: (5) Laurinaitis, Ogletree, Dunbar, Armstrong, Bates
DB: (8) Jenkins, Johnson, Joyner , Alexander, McDonald, McLeod, Gaines, Reid

Specialists (3)

Tough...I have a real problem leaving Gaines on this list...His coverage skills scream "zone", is it possible he could play some backup safety? How is he on ST?
Not sure which wr's will remain on the PS, but none will dress on game day.....Think we'll keep another TE on the PS too...Bailey was big as a gunner, he really hurt the team here....As some have noted, I am pulling for Barrett Jones to pull a major upset on Wells, then we could run with this OL set up, if he doesn't, it's a toss-up between he & Barnes...advantage Barnes. I could do a ST KO, P, PR, & KOR...but a lil pressed right now....

This list doesn't include a group of players who will make the 53 man roster, but are likely to be INACTIVE on game day. Players such as the 4th TE, be it Bayer or Cunningham. And there are obviously gonna be other linemen and DBs who will not be active. Just spit balling here, trying to add a different take on what has been many other "prediction" threads.

I like your list Coach. And I think I know where you are going w/ it. Some of those guys simply need a few games under their belt before they get on the game day roster. (That's why Pead on special teams makes your roster before Cunningham. Cunningham's position gets taken by Mason and Pead does more on special teams. The Westbrooks guy (Dline) looks like an iteresting guy as they will try to line him up inside but he's a natural DE. But needs some seasoning before he cracks our lineup.

I see what you did there with the OL, Coach. Can't disagree given the flexibility for backup OT among Saffold, and Robinson with Joseph, Jones, and Barnes to plug in at OG.

This is totally unfounded as to the OL. You might see them play a few cards with the OT spot, but Greg Robinson has shown absolutely NO SKILL at Pass Pro to even be considered at this point to be a back up tackle!
Totally agree with the concept of backup guard, but how many do you need ? It will depend on how Barrett does in camp specifically at guard if he is to be considered a fill in. I am saying they will have to keep either Person, or Hooey on the 53, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if one of them makes the 46 with the other kept on the 53, or PS...I also think Davin joeseph could easily here the "TURK" come knocking as a result of Branden Washington nailing down one of the back up guard spots.

I think this is spot on ! Pead is a lock for ST, and yes on Mason.

I agree with you regarding Person maybe the guy who bumps someone like Jones from the 46 dame day active roster.

Unless you are privy to some info that the rest of aren't, I really don't see Washington being in the mix, much less supplanting Joseph.

So...game day 46. Starter and back-up at each position, plus punter, kicker and long-snapper = 47.
Why 46?

Why 46?

Thats the actual number of players who are "active" on game day. Teams can circumvent the 45 man limit by designating a "3rd QB", making the actual number 46.

So, I'm assuming by this you'd have Pead in Reynolds' old role of "punter protector?"

I am putting Cody Davis in that spot, a position he served as backup to Reynolds last year. Pead remains the gunner on the Punt Coverage unit.

Would give Carrington a uniform before Michael Sam.

And I would agree with you, depending on the opponent, and whether or not Sam earns his way onto Special Teams. If he becomes one of the core members and is counted on multiple ST units, then he will dress. If not, he doesn't, and Carrington is the obvious choice. But I also took into consideration, that both Sims and Hayes can slide inside on passing downs.

Yeah...I think you'll be a little surprised at the line up on the OL when you can get down there..I was told they are gonna mix things up ..And maybe you won't be surprised. But watch whose getting the reps at LT and let me know what your thoughts are ? I think your right about DJ coach ;)
I also think your thinking like me that it's perplexing to think they might consider carrying 3 at C ?
