Looking at his physical talent it would be tempting for any OC I would think. Physically the guy has it all. Jeff George arm and Randall Cunningham legs.
Like you said, he has not learned to read well. Last night the Whiners seemed to sort of say, ok, if your read isn't there feel free to run. That is probably the best approach with him at this point. He is still relatively young and might actually benefit from sitting for a year....although that won't happen I am sure.
Playing under Chris Ault here in Reno, running the pistol....that offense is designed to take reads AWAY from the QB. Despite his huge arm talent Nevada was the only school that offered him a scholarship to play QB. Ault was smart enough to know he was a perfect match for his offense (the current Nevada QB recently joined Kap as the only two in history to throw for over 12,000 yards and rush for over 3,000 yards in a career and is project as a 3rd or so round draft pick). So, Kap came into the NFL basically as a guy who spent four years in college NOT making reads by design. There were some signs of progress early on this year I think and he generally does not throw a lot of pics, but, he has regressed again (good). So, I don't see that match either, unless they are going to run some variation of it.
The problem with the NFL and offenses like the pistol or the wildcat or whatever is DCs will always adjust. The QB is starting in a set place in the same spot every play. There are limited options there in terms of running for the QB no matter how it was disguised. I don't know if teams have figured out how to keep Kap in the pocket or if SF has been forcing him to stay in the pocket....but he has NO feel for moving in the pocket. As soon as he senses pressure his eyes come down to the line and he is not looking to pass (very much like Davis this year), not ability yet to slide in the pocket and find the open guy.
Sorry, that is a very long winded way of saying....I agree.
