11 Pound Bass

All you fishermen know that catching a largemouth bass 10+ pounds is a real catch. I've never caught one the weighed double digits, but one of my son's did last night.

Here's the fish tale. Him and his buddy snuck onto a well known golf coarse last night... Bay Hill. Around 10:30. On the first cast, my son had almost reeled his crayfish lure all the way back in when the bass grabbed it and peeled line out across the entire pond. The fish broke his rod when he started reeling it back across the pond. The rod broke at the point were there was only one eyelet left on his spinning rod. Light spinning tackle. He managed to land the fish anyway.

He released it unharmed.

His buddy caught a 6 pounder on the second cast and then they left cause my son's rod was broken. They're going back tonight. LOL

For size perspective,,, my son is 6'1". He's one of my 17 year old twins.

Years ago my crew and I were doing the roof on a huge McMansion in Washington Depot, CT. My buddy asked the elderly lady who lived there if there were any fish in the lake behind the house. She told him her husband used yo have it stocked for his own private fishing, but he died 5 years earlier. Next day we were out there with poles and were pulling in 8lbers about every five minutes

HaHaHa - That's great. I know of a golf course near Portland that has monster bass in it because no one is allowed to fish it. Not sure they're THAT big though. Your son better be pretty sneaky. The golf course rent-a-cops can be real assholes - or so I hear.

Man though... looking at that mouth you have to figure some ducks have lost their life to that dude.

I grew up near a golf course with a river running next to it. There was some huge catfish in that part of the river. As a kid I used to find golf balls, clean them up and sell them to the pro shop for snack money. Back then you could get a candy bar for a dime.

When I was a young man I lived to hunt and fish. For several years I use to drive by an abandoned farm on my way to work. You could see a nice size pond nestled in the woods behind the house from the road. I did some asking around and found out the owner of the farm lived outta state and the farm had been vacant for about 12 years. Each time I drove by it seemed that pond called to me. Finally I went all in and went back there. My first cast my pole bent double and the line snapped. I was in shock I always kept my equipment in top shape. Shaking I rerigged and threw in the same spot. This time with the drag loose. Bam! A hit. I fought it for what felt like forever nursing it the whole way. Finally netting the biggest bass I had ever seen before or since. Congrats to your boy it will be a great memory for him.

Bass are quite tasty. I usually release them but I always have the little pang to take one home.

We used to catch the bigguns when they were spawning. You have to throw them back because they are not in season but I stopped that practice a while back because biologists believe that it is bad for the spawning/bedding process to be catching the fish at all. But man when we were kids we had a blast. We would cruise the lake in a canoe looking for that tell tale flash of gold from the golden shiners. Then we would get the ultra light rods out and catch a few and head to shore. Put a big ole hook through the shiners back or tail and walk the shore looking for beds and cast that shiner near a bed. It worked every time. The bass really seem to hate having Golden Shiners anywhere near their beds. They would pick the fish up and swim around with it. They didn't eat it. So we would wait and try to figure out if the shiner was in the bass's mouth good enough and set the hook hard. We caught enormous bass that way. I never weighed them. We just used to measure them. Over 20 inches long was common. Big ones were about 24-25.

Then later in Spring/Summer when the bass were in season those big guys just disappeared. It seemed like the lake didn't even have any fish in it. Strange. But just as well that they were not getting caught out because every year they would be back again at the same spawning beds.

Dylan has a friend who lives there... they're gone for the week (spring break). They are watching the dog... have access. Parked in the driveway and went out through the backyard. Gotta go out there at night or the Bay Hill golf course 5-0 is very strict.

Nobody ever fishes these ponds.

That fucker could eat a little duck with no problem... my neighbor saw one get eaten by a bass on our lake. LOL

You do know a world record bass is worth $1M to ya right? At least weigh them if they are huge like that!

Good lord thats a lunker!! Bigges bass I have ever landed was barely 8bs. They can be a little harder to catch like that on the St. Lawrence river though! Now the northern pike and musky on the other hand...

Hahaha.

We prefer saltwater fish for eating, and my boys like to release the big bass so they can try and catch them again. All edible fish caught in saltwater are immediately cleaned and bagged around here though.

I didn't have time for grilling this past weekend because I was finally able to take our boat out. We were looking for some cobia. No luck though cause the water was too cold still and we had a weird weather deal were the clouds came down on the water and basically made viability about 50 feet in any direction at about 2pm. It was like the movie The Fog.

We did catch some major buzzes though. This was my motley crew on Saturday. So, it wasn't all bad... LOL

That's a lifetime fish right there. Largemouth Bass is my favorite species to fish. I usually catch and release, but if I'd caught that one, he'd be mounted in the man cave.
