completely different position.

3 TE set has not been working too well lately either.
"Lately" doing a lot of work here. It's been two games, one against the 2nd or 3rd best D in the NFL and another after we lost one of our top TEs.

Additionally, a big reason we run 3TE is to get opposing defenses into base as many D's play nickel against 2TE sets these days. Bucs play a lot more base in general so we got them in base from just 2TE sets last night.

It's because back up TE are rarely great. It worked great against the 49ners who are heavily depleted.

I'm not saying give up on it - just saying it's a bit more closer to reality now.

I def like it against worse defenses....

The Bucs game was a great example of when you would want to run three tight ends, that being with a big lead and then it's time to mash that ball up their asses.

One funny thing I noted was the look on McVay's face late third quarter when the offense came off the field for a punt... He was visibly pissed off and barking a bit at Stafford. Which I think runs counter to the idea he takes his foot off the gas. Makes me think it is just as viable that the offense relaxes a bit as a group when they get the big lead. Which is not a good habit and something to work on going forward.

Well...I don't take that as anything but depth...because for some reason McVay doesn't get him in the mix as much as he could. I remember back when Kupp was out about 2-3 years ago and Tutu filled in nicely...then went back to "the unseen" list. I think Tutu should get in EVERY GAME.

Every year we're hearing Tutu could be gone but gets re-signed but rarely used...

Imo looking for upside is what you do when your team isn't a real contender. Ferguson has shown promise but still has a big learning curve. Getting Tutu involved now with the attention Davante and Puka are commanding is something we still haven't seen. His value as a decoy and deep threat alone is worth his fair share of snaps.

The period between the GSOT and McVay conditioned a lot of us to think in terms of longterm development rather than how to win now. With Higs down, Ferguson will continue to get his chances and getting Atwell involved should mean fewer snaps for Mumpfield and Whittington more than it should affect the personnel McVay chooses.

I saw that.... I think Stafford audibled out of the set play and it got McVay's kinckebockers in a bunch.... lol...

I was more laughing at Stafford's face I think it was in the 1st quarter when he had a baffled WTF look on his face with a play call coming into his helmet speaker.... I'm sure it was McVay speaking at the speed of sound... lol...

Seems like he has the chance to break them for more yardage IMO. Can't argue with winning however :)

But I would rather get Ferguson some reps and develop some confidence. I think his upside far exceeds TuTu's.
Good Points Gentlemen, throw that WR screen to Puka, make it a TE screen to Ferguson and let him do some damage. Then max protect and bombs away to Chatarius Antwan "Tutu" Atwell Jr.

Ferg has had 1 target in the last 2 games. Tutu almost had that many on IR. Somewhat baffling that some of these TE screens don't involve Ferg. Seems like he has the chance to break them for more yardage IMO. Can't argue with winning however :)
It's about subverting expectations on tendencies. We want the TE to be an afterthought on the TE screen. Ferg is more likely to get defensive attention when we're throwing.

Totally agree. He just opens things up for everyone else. The Rams need his deep threat speed. He is a DPI: Defensive Pass Interference in waiting too.

I think the reason is because Allen or Parkinson are the usual blocker inline which is what sells the screen and makes it go so to speak. Play action, TE is pass blocking, no wait, it's a screen to the TE. Usually goes for 10 to 15 yards and keeps the offense on schedule.
