Los Angeles Rams TE Johnny Mundt isn’t as tall as TE Tyler Higbee or as fast as TE Gerald Everett, but he really isn’t chopped liver.

He has a total of just one career catch, which would be 75 if you were to multiply it by 75. But really, Mundt has ability. He flashed it when he was an Oregon Duck as well as during the preseason last year. The guy can block and is a decent target. Mundt also cracked Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel’s Bones Brigade appearing on about half of the Rams’ special teams snaps last season.

The name Mundt doesn’t sound all that dynamic, but it is a good tight end name. If you’re named Johnny Mundt, I bet you can take a hit and hold onto the ball.

Johnny Mundt!

Roster Battle
Mundt is looking to hang on as the Rams third tight end, but special teams will be his lifeline until he gets a more serious opportunity to work with the offense. His stiffest competition may come from UDFA tight end Kendall Blanton (roster preview) who draftscout.com projected as a possible 5th - or 6th-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Missouri. Blanton is slower than Mundt, but has great size at 6’6”, and 262 lbs. The Rams also brought in UDFAs Romello Brooker (roster preview) from the University of Houston and Keenan Brown from Texas State.

Expectations
I’d guess Mundt will make the team due to his experience. I don’t think Rams Head Coach Sean McVay would be that alarmed if Mundt had to step up for a few games should Everett or Higbee get dinged up. That matters. So while it’s possible, I wouldn’t bet on an UDFA being able to unseat Mundt this season.

Chances of Making Roster (6/10)
More likely than not Mundt beats out the law firm of Blanton, Brooker and Brown.

I can't wait for the camp reports on TE not to mention the preseason games where I'll be watching that position closely. Lot of decisions looming there, with Higbee being a FA after the season and Everett having one year left of club control if he comes on strong in camp and beyond.

And the depth spots in particular are intriguing. Rams just brought in some kids who are better athletes than Mr. Mundt, so his development will require improved hands and consistency in the passing game if he wants to ensure his roster spot is safe. It's going to be a great position to track, along with OL.

I think if Romello Brooker can shine in TC and pre-season he's got a shot at unseating Mundt. Mundt has been nothing but a bench sitter and truth be told, in this offense they don't need to carry 3 TE's. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they only carry 2 and stash Brooker on the PS. This will give them a roster spot to carry 9 on the oline which actually makes more sense.

McVay's offense simply doesn't focus on the TE. The Y receiver (Kupp) runs those routes better than any TE can. This offense can operate with no TE's and simply play Henderson or Reynolds instead.

With the emergence of Reynolds, they can do that. This will force teams to play their dime lineup and that will really open up the run game as it will take 2 LB's out of that box. Playing 4 WR's might be coming. They have the WR depth to do it. Woods, Cooks, Kupp and Reynolds with Gurley in the backfield....eat your heart out AZ and Hawks. Their Dline will have to stop the RB and Ram WR's block well.

That is so FREAKING SILLY. The Rams are looking to play more 2 TE sets this season says TE & OC Waldron. Everett was shining big time in OTA’s & talking all kinds of smack.
Higbee is Goff’s guy since day one in training camp as roommates. You can see that in Hard Knocks if anything. Higbee has had a tough time at times(especially in practice) holding on to the ball. He has improved. Will see soon though.
As far as Mundt ?? I don’t know ?? I think he has been hurt a lot ??? Was he hurt last season or both seasons during the beginning of training camps ?? What I know is that last season I was yelling at Demoff to get a TE.
He wanted to kick my ass. He made a play to come do it. Demoff is bad ass !!
I actually like that they only kept Everett & Higbee only. To say this offense can run without a TE ??
Crazy talk to say NO TE’s ?? Use Reynolds & Henderson (LMAO) loss a lot of street cred here. Bring in an extra O’Lineman is more like it !! Especially with new faces upfront. Higbee does a good job blocking,so Everett actually doesn’t play enough as it is.
Play Reynolds over Everett in the slot !!!!

Lol,lol, lol, lol !! Damn that is funny stuff right there. Like I say I don’t know nothing about no back up it 3rd TE & thought Demoff & Snead we’re wrong for not having that position
Having more depth. Higbee could not hold on to the ball at all. I think Everett & Mundt were
Both hurt ??? I was upset so maybe Brooker is that extra guy The Rams need this season for depth & practice squad ?? Higbee is going to be a FA & The Rams cap space. That part I like .
Once again this offense run without a TE with McVay being a TE’s coach & Waldron being both the TE’s coach & OC ?! I guess they should take that TE’s coach off of Waldron ?? What a joke of a position coach.
Dude still has training wheels.
Yeah- last season during the combine he was on the field as one of the TE’s coaches.
What a waste of time. Since McVay could run this offense without a TE ??? Just think in the Super Bowl The Rams would have won it if only they brought in the St. (Oops) Arizona Cardinals. head coach as an assistant coach to show him how a college football guy does it.
I know the NFL is evolving, but McVay still apples old School values.( thinking off the Hart days)
