Rams expected to get two third-round compensatory picks
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 7, 2019

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...ed-to-get-two-third-round-compensatory-picks/
The Rams and Patriots were two of the top teams in the NFL this season, but they didn’t mortgage the future to build for the present. In fact, one good measure of how well a team plans for the future is how well it does at getting compensatory picks. And the Rams and Patriots are expected to get the best compensatory pick compensation in the NFL in 2019.

Although the NFL hasn’t yet released the full list of compensatory picks for the 2019 draft, Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com typically projects the picks accurately, and his projections for this year’s draft say that the Rams and Patriots will each get two third-round compensatory picks.

The NFL awards compensatory picks to players who lose free agents and don’t sign other free agents to replace them, and the more expensive the free agents you lose, the better the picks you get. The Patriots two third-round picks will be for losing Nate Solder and Malcolm Butler, while the Rams’ two third-round picks will be for losing Trumaine Johnson and Sammy Watkins.

Sure appears to me the Rams Org. (Demoff/Snead/McVay/Wade) made the right decision to let Tru & Sammy ride off to the eastern morning sun about a yr ago. Should provide us with a sense that this Orgs decisions (as a whole) are generally very good. If this team continues to win going for its 14th win this Saturday night...Rams players who will soon be in the same shoes as Trumaine Johnson, Sammy Watkins & Cody Davis shoes ....Rams UFA's Suh, Joyner, Saffold, Fowler & even CJ Anderson have an opportunity to showcase their skills in the postseason playoffs for all the other 31 NFL teams to watch.

2019 Market Values analysis have been completed on Suh @ approx 9.3 mil & Joyner @ approx 10.6 million. Even Dante Fowler Jr. because he is a talented very young edge pass rusher always demand an 8 mil to 9 mil yearly contract. The 2020 draft stands to have 2 to 3 additional comprehensive selections added to our 2020 draft.

This upcoming draft Snead appears to have 7 selections. One selection the first day of the draft. Two selections on Friday evening 2nd day & four for the last day Saturday afternoon. I really enjoy the NFL draft but when the Rams can play on all three days :yay::party:

2019 Rams Projected draft selections
First rd.>-#31
Third rd.>-#94
Third rd.>-#100 Comp
Fourth rd.>-#133
Fifth rd.>#170
Sixth rd.>#205
Seventh rd.>#253 Comp

So the first comp pick goes to the Jags for Fowler. That works out well.

You just know some idiot team is going to throw money at Fowler. And it'll be hard for the Rams to sign on for a big contract for him when he's only had a couple sacks in 8 games. I don't think the cost is going to line up with expected production. He'll be a Sammy Watkins type situation where someone pays him based on potential and we cannot afford to roll that particular set of dice.

Rams' defense this offseason should look something like...

ROLB: <need>
3T: Donald
NT: <need>
5T: Brock (think they have him put on some weight)
LOLB: Ebukam / Okowrongkwo
ILB: Littleton
ILB: <need>
S: Johnson
S: <need>
CB: Talib
CB: Peters

Green means good, Red means need, Orange means iffy or might be a need or will after next season. This isn't even considering depth. Roster obviously needs enormous work.

Going to start looking at FA lists once the playoffs are over. Can't get too much into this stuff just yet when we still have a shot to win it all. (y)

I hope tgey can drop down I to early 2nd and get a high 3rd in return. Would still them 5 picks in top 4 rounds.

Need DT, CB, ILB, S, OL depth

Curious if Joeseph-Day has a future on the DL and how the rookie LBs from this year are looked at as potenrial future starters.

I just see the need for a more athletic front line w/ size. Right now it's Donald and a bunch of guys playing like JAGS.

Hope this pans out with the two 3rd round comp picks the Rams need.

I'm just not feeling the big contract money going to Fowler. He wasn't play much with the Jags while making a few good plays with the Rams. More or less considered a bust before the trade. He has value to the Rams as an every down player and one less hole to fill. Rams culture seems like a good fit for him to work harder and improve. We will have to see what offers he gets. I think Rams have a good chance to keep him at a very reasonable price.

I have to agree with you on Fowler. I haven't seen anything on the field that would make him get a big contract. Best thing I see for him is a short prove it contract with lots of incentives. I think he stays with the Rams because he likes playing with AD

Rams are not in a good position going into March's free agency with our Edge Rushers without Dante Fowler Jr.

Rams have 3 ER'ers who started for Wade this season entering FA'cy as a UFA's. Rams also have 2 other ER'ers who will be RFA's. That a good size amount entering FA'cy from this ER position. If it weak now what will it be later in March? DC Wade will still have 3 young ER'ers secured by contract remaining. Starter Samson Ebukam, reserves rookie 7th rd pick Justin Lawler & Rookie 6th rd. pick Trevon Young. :(

I would not want to bind this Rams team into a long-term contract with DF either. If DF does begin to play with fire I would offer him a 1 yr prove it contract only. If DF is offered a moderate 7 mil to 8 mil a season Rams might stand to get a 4th rd pick awarded which may be the best thing to occur.

Rams have several priorities on defense but Wade's D requires effective consitant Edge Rushers to work properly. Rams do not have any. The price/cost $$$$ to purchase a young ER in FA'cy . Rams Org. might go with a stop gap well seasoned UFA like a Clay Mathews who might want to come back to LA to finish his career or well seasoned Derrick Morgan may have one more season left & might come for less. Some lesser known ER's like Marcus Smith, Anthony Chickillo & maybe Anthony Barr might want to return to LA & try out Wade hybrid 34 D for a change.

Rams are not in good position at ER now Bonifay. I see ER as a complete failure this season and I don't think keeping those guys really help us. We need to decide if the future defense is going to be a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense. When we do that we need to draft players that fit that system. Is sad to see that with all the attention AD gets nobody else can do anything consistently. It wouldn't be as bad if said players at least played the run well but they suck at that. The defense has been a huge disappointment which makes what AD did this season so amazing. I'm hoping we resign Fowler cheap and Obo/ Young/Sampson can turn it around next season.

I agree fully.

Snead has drafted five ER'ers in 2 drafts that do not fit what Wade needs. Rams drafted 2 in 2017 draft & 3 in this yrs draft & none have improved to any point where I see an average starter @ ER post. :palm:

I agree with @Merlin that Fowler gets overpaid. I'd prefer to keep him in horns, but it's not likely.

Getting a third round comp pick isn't bad for letting Watkins leave. I'd rather Snead had just kept the second rounder and not traded for him. But that's hindsight.
