In 1985 I'm in the Air Force in Dayton Ohio and they show the highlights of the Rams victory over the Denver Broncos in week one and Dieter Brock is shown putting on his helmet and my good friend and roommate Joey from Pittsburgh says about Brock "He looks old." and I responded "You look old." I added some expletives, but you get the gist.

I remember watching the Monday Night game on December 9th with Brock leading the Rams to victory. I wasn't surprised the Rams went after Brock, they went hard after Warren Moon a year earlier in 1984 and were close to signing Moon, until those damn Houston Oilers came in and secured Moon by hiring his Head Coach in Canada Hugh Campbell, who only lasted two years. I will always wonder, what would have happened if the Rams & Robinson signed Moon.

But let's keep this in mind, the Ram passing offense was archaic under Robinson, they really didn't have an Offensive Coordinator after Jimmy Raye left as Robinson was just calling running plays, so Brock spoke about that in an interview, how considering the offense, he actually had good stats. It's too bad, his back was ailing, but the Rams moved on and made a deal for Everett, the only issue was, that their penny pinching owner Madam Georgia would not pay Eric the Great, so the Everett/Dickerson combo never had a chance.

Holy Fuck amazing vid! Thank you @LoyalRam ! Always wondered what the obsession was about Dieter Brock and users naming themselves after him but makes sense now!

Not that I'm a football savant but watching that vid of the Bears mauling our offense I'm screaming " run a TE or WR quick screen or quick slant!" lol I don't know if they were in the NFL back then. So many things could be used that was used to beat the 46 D that is common for me even 15 years ago.

To the older conscious members, the next season did film study unravel the Bears 46?

My first memory of football was in 89' as a 9 yr old watching Flipper Anderson catching that game winning TD running into the tunnel and wondering where the hell he went and why, so a bit before my time?

Very curious about this timeline that many vids and google/wiki won't give you insights and stories like @Davefan51 used to give me about older times in the teams history.

RIP Dave :horns:

We had quite a few teams in the old days that were a QB away. Maybe even an imaginative OC away. Glad those are no longer concerns for us, well, they aren't concerns for me at least.

Too much focus on the NFC Championship game ... the 85 Bears were one of the best ever -- any season where you make the playoffs is considered good - when you make the NFC Championship that is a great season. Brock was outstanding in 1985.

Narrator says fans turned on Brock ... How many old fans on this forum turned on Brock at the time?

I was in the Navy at the time and was consumed with shipboard life aboard USS Fletcher. I only watched a few games that year and was underwhelmed by one of the games, and the media in LA wasn't that complimentary? Yet, we beat the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs and that was my Super Bowl of sorts, because we had rarely done so in my life before 1985.

RIP Dave :horns:

Dave was and still is the best, however, the Rams tried to run several slants in 85, but Brock just could not complete the passes as they were knocking them down at the line of scrimmage and when Brock did get them to the receiver, they were under thrown. Got to the point I actually wanted Robinson to try Jeff Kemp because he was far more mobile then Brock and might have been able to complete that pass.

It's too bad, the Ram defense was special in 85, but the Bears were at home and their offense was better, would have loved Warren Moon in that game, but again, they lost out to him in 1984.

As to the Bears in 86, keep in mind, that their renowned Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan, father of both Rex & Rob Ryan left after the Bears Super Bowl victory to take over the Philadelphia Eagles and the Bears hired Vince Tobin as the new DC and kind of like when Chuck Pagano took over for Vic Fangio last year the Bear defense was never the same & Bear QB Jim McMahon was truly never healthy again and the Rams in 1986 defeated the Chicago Bears by the score of 20-17 on a 51 yard FG by Mike Lansford.

The Quarterback for the Rams that Monday Night was Steve Dils, who's jersey always look like it read Oils. Dils, only completed only 6-25 passes for 137 yards, but one of those was a 65 yard bomb to Ron Brown.

Looks like flyboy's in Ohio had a lot of time off with 14 section duty in the 80's

Combat Controller and when not deployed was just an ATC that worked the 6am - 3pm shift because nobody wanted to wake up early. However, the thing that is really going to piss you off is that was Monday - Friday and it came with weekends off and the ability to go to night school at the University of Dayton.

I had 4 section duty with weekend duty one week end a month while the ship was in port. I guarantee you there was no cable/satellite TV when we we were "haze gray, and underway!"

Wow that’s very interesting and informative to read Den!
Thank you!

So seriously? We almost had a chance of getting Moon in 84’? Wth happened? Damn! We would of probably won 1-2 Championship there!

Also, regarding Dieter, he was our best QB before Everett in the 80’s? Looking at stats it’s amazing the ineptitude we had!

You were a CCC? If so, my respect to you good sir. When I was 16-17 my step mom used to hang out with the CCC guys at McChord AFB as a recruiter promoting etc. They were pretty damned cool to be around, plus all their gear was really neat to.

Well, we've been over this, had my own apartment with two bathrooms and a patio with an extensive cable TV Package. Then was married, purchased a duplex and rented both of those out after attending OTS and then receiving base housing for Officers and the house was off the 27 hole golf course on Wright-Patterson AFB. Really don't know why I got out.

Flyboys always had it good. Only reason I didn't go into the Air Force was that I heard it was hard to advance (because no one got out!) lol

In 1984 it came down to the Oilers & the Rams for Warren Moon Services, the only reason Moon went with the Oilers was because at the last minute the Oilers informed him, if he signed with them, they would hire his Coach in Canada, Hugh Campbell. The Rams lost out to the Oilers a few other times,

In 1960 LSU Standout Billy Cannon chose the Houston Oilers over the Los Angeles Rams. In 1978 the Rams had a deal in place with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to secure their first round selection, but the Houston Oilers came in at the last minute and the Buccaneers sent the pick to Houston, in which, they drafted Earl Campbell (Who Ram Owner Carroll Rosenbloom coveted) and then Warren Moon in 1984.
