Rams defensive tackle Darell Scott, who hasn’t been at practice the past couple of days, has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery, and will miss the rest of the preseason and most likely beyond.

Scott, a fourth-round draft pick by the Rams out of Clemson in 2009, was facing an uphill battle to make the team prior to the injury, with Jermelle Cudjo and Matt Conrath having a good hold on the backup jobs behind starters Michael Brockers and Kendall Langford.

Meanwhile, the news wasn’t as bad on backup defensive end Eugene Sims. He was not on the practice field and was wearing a walking boot at Rams Park on Wednesday because of an ankle injury. He was out on the field watching practice Thursday, and was not in a boot. The Rams feared he might have a high-ankle sprain, but it turns out that’s not the case. So instead of being out perhaps a month or more, he might only miss a week or two.

Even so, the Rams signed DE Vernon Gholston on Wednesday to help with their depth at the position. Gholston took part in his first practice with the team Thursday, wearing jersey No. 70.
