I was just responding to @Tano about Isaiah getting hammered by Earl Campbell in the 70's, when it occurred to me to start a thread about 2nd favorite teams. If I ever had one, it was the late 70's Houston Oilers: HC Bum Phillips, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, Dan Pastorini, Earl Campbell.
Why?
I was born in Whittier and grew up being a Rams' fan, but in Oct. of 1975 my Dad was relocated to a small town outside of Houston, TX. We had like 2-3 channels of tv stations before cable tv was available. The newspapers always had a small paragraph about Rams games. Of course there was no internet and so there was literally no NFL news outside of the Oilers and the Cowboys. My Dad would get tickets to see the Oilers at the Astrodome every once in a while when the game was too boring for his clients to want to see, We'd get to go. What fun that was! The atmosphere was electric with the Houston Oilers' silly anthem playing after every touchdown (you couldn't help but join in). The Oilers were like the Rams at the time, in that although they were good, they could never get by the 70's Steelers. Earl Campbell was the most exciting RB and maybe the best RB, I ever saw in perspn. ("Skoal, brother").
That ended in 1978 when I moved to Northern California and could catch Rams vs 49ers games (finally). Yep, just in time for Joe Montana and Bill Walsh! lol. Yeah, I was never a Niners fan!

Did you ever have a second favorite team? If so, why did you have one? Rams forever, baby!

I used to, when I wore a younger man's clothes as I did like the Chiefs with Hank Stram and concur with @Loyal liking the Oilers under Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips Jr. However, now it is only the Rams and anybody else playing the San Francisco 49ers as my two favorite teams in the NFL.

I will add whoever is playing the cowboys to that list.

Otherwise, I dislike all of the other 31. It is the reason I am mot able to play fantasy football.

Not a Josh Allen fan. Hated Stephan Diggs. But lived in Buffalo for couple years when so was young and father was diehard Bills fan. So Buffalo is my AFC team. Been back for a couple games with my Dad and brothers before he passed. Lots of heartache for those fans but they are great fans and man do they have fun tailgating.

I was going to put a gif of the Whiners but watching it felt to cringey.

I like the Ravens and Texans.

I also liked the Oilers and miss their classic uniforms full time. I watched that 1978 game with the Earl Campbell run back in the day and of course I cheered the Rams on to victory. I didn't really care as much after Campbell left... Moon and the run & shoot never really appealed to me. But those helmets were easily top 10. Luv Ya Blue days were my favorite Oiler teams. Love the fight song.

Not really, although I had a kinda-2nd favorite in the Panthers for a while, since I lived in Charlotte when they came into the league.

(In the Closet Oilers lover!) Sing it with me, Corbin!

I think the owners of the Titans should give back the trademarks etc., to the Texans and the Houston franchise should revert back to the Oilers. I loved the classic AFL air about them.

I would be all for changing the Texans into the old Oilers namesake. It seemed to be almost blasphemy watching the Titans wearing the Oilers garb, vs the Texans

I have mentioned this before but growing up I didn't really have a team as locally most people were Bears or Packers fans and just never fell in love with either. I loved Barry Sanders and the way he played... and celebrated (or lack of) by simply handing the ball to the ref when he scored. So became a Lions fan in early 90s as I didn't really have a team yet.

Then the Rams moved to the Lou and I went hardcore to the horns from there on out. But always had a passing interest in the Lions. It helped they were hopeless and no threat to the Rams ever. Now that they are an actual threat for the NFC and the way some of their fans were this years playoffs I've lost the appeal of seeing them succeed for the time being.

I don't have a solid second favorite team. I'm fair weather when it comes to that. Back in the early 2000s, I would usually pick a team to root for in the playoffs because we were never in the playoffs. My dad and son are Dolphin fans, so I presently find myself rooting for them more often than not. I will admit, I rooted for the Cardinals back when Warner was on the team. I also tend to root against the 49ers, Cowboys, and Patriots any chance I get.

It is hard for me to root for another NFC team... but I'd probably say the Lions. They are a fun team to watch, score lots of points, and they haven't won much in their history... so, that makes them a little easier to root for.

In the AFC... probably the Chiefs... but I might root some for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. That could be a fun team this year, with storylines.

I actually coulda become a Raider fan. Daryl Lamonica is from the Fresno area. Clovis to be exact. There was a popular truck stop restaurant about a quarter mile from where I grew up. Klein's truck stop on highway 99.

My best friend and I used to do a little work around the restaurant for the owner. Mostly clean up stuff. He'd let us have a free meal when we were done. We both met Daryl Lamonica who was a friend of the owner. We were star struck kids around 12 years old. But we also became Rams fans the year before.

So after that encounter we both adopted the Raiders as our second favorite team. If we met him a year before we probably woulda been Raider fans.
