First of all; the NYC marathon? Wow! I am not familiar with the race if there are different lengths, but the full marathon is 26 miles.

From the "running" thread it appears you have participated in distances like that before.

Is this your first go at the NYC marathon? Love to hear more about your story heading up to the decision to run it. Good luck!

And... What an awesome tribute to Rich. Never ceases to amaze me how a Rams forum can bring people together and form a bond like that. The relationships Thor formed, speaks to how he engaged with people around here.

@Thordaddy

I was pretty heartbroken that I couldnt make it to the Lou for the season opener to honor our dear departed friend. But thanks to @CGI_Ram I was able to reach out to Rich's daughter and share with her how important her dad was to me, and frankly to anyone that knew him.
Over the years, on this board and another, he was incredibly supportive of people embracing physical fitness. So I shared with Jennifer that I was running the NYC marathon and thought it would be cool to carry a trinket of Rich with me. But much to my surprise the family responded with so much more.
Today I recieved in the mail a shirt and hat he had so much pride in. As most know, Rich had a passion for wrestling and helped create the wrestling program at Notre Dame high school where his boys attended.
So I will miss much of the game on Sunday as I'll be tackling the streets of NYC. But I'll Thordaddy with me so its all good.
Go Rams and Screw the Niners!!!

That is so cool. Rich talked about coaching wrestling all the time. He loved working with youth and especially anything that got them out exercising. I'm really happy to see that Rich will be with you during such a huge event. Though I never met Rich, we talked on the phone a fair bit and texted and emailed back and forth. We were planning to go skiing in CO when he was healthy enough. Just really thought we would get that chance. He was quite a guy and won't soon be forgotten. Let's hope Thor gives you wings. Good luck in the race.

What a beautiful way to carry the torch! Life is for the living and we have to march on for the fallen friends and live for them. They would encourage us to do so. Thanks for sharing and caring. Rams fans are some of the best people anywhere.

Pretty wild right? I hit her up as soon as I finished to tell her we made it, and didnt hear back for a while, when she finally responded, it was with "I was at the game!!!"
Life is so wildly ironic and cool

It was an incredible day. I had some physical issues late, but had some help from above.
There were many warnings that it was going to be hot yesterday after the clouds burned off, but it seemed that any time the sun came out in its glory, a nice cloud cover came out to seal it up.

I'm struggling with it, I dont want to come off as ungrateful. Being able to honor Thordaddy was more important than anything else. The weather was perfect, the race is just amazing. I am not a fan of big crowds, my preference is smaller races. But I'd run NYC every year if I could get in
That said, I am disappointed, I had a solid plan and was working it to perfection. But at mile 17 I got hit with some leg cramping that I couldnt shake. Muscled out the last 8-9 but my time suffered greatly.
Finished around 4:28. Was right at 2 hours at the half way mark, and was ready to make my move. But the legs wouldnt have it.

Dieter,
As someone that knows how difficult it is to run a marathon I am impressed by your time. Sorry to hear about the leg cramps but 4:28 is a heck of a time. One day I will run the NYC marathon but it won't be anytime soon. Honoring your friend was a real nice touch and I am sure his family really appreciated it. I saw that earlier in the post and was touched by the gesture.

Great effort just to finish -- sometimes in running you just don't have it on the day so you use what you do have.

Should be proud to have stuck at it and finished. Well done.
