Here is what we got:

  • Lance Dunbar. Free agent from the cowboys. Undersized. Undrafted. Only 31 rushing yards in 2016. Has had injuries.
  • Malcom Brown. Also was a UDFA. 2 years in the NFL and only 50 yards to his name. North/south runner. Not sure why he has so little volume, injuries? Maybe someone else can fill me in.
  • Aaron Green. Another UDFA. 0 yards in the NFL. Nothing really notable about this guy as far as I can tell.
  • Gurley, RB1. Solid all around, should bounce back at least a bit in 2017. Can be a receiving threat but still need a solid 3rd down back imo.
  • Justin Davis 2017 UDFA. Big fella from USC but doesn't play very big. Injury concerns. Not a big receiving threat.
TLDR: Gurley and 4 UDFAs who altogether rushed for less than 70 yards in the NFL last year.

Anyone else concerned about our RB depth? Who is our 3rd down back, Gurley? Maybe Dunbar can fill the receiving role? Which back is the best pass blocker? Are we asking too much of Gurley as an all purpose back?

Not concerned, will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff utilizes Malcolm Brown though. Brown is a bigger back and IMHO a must to back up Gurley. Dunbar going to play the role of Chris Thompson of the Redskins under McVay. Overall I don't see anything from the UDRFA's that remain and I expect the Rams to keep only three RB's on the final 53 with 1 or 2 on the practice squad.

I think backup RB is among the least of our concerns.

Hell, I think that we will be forced to cut quality RB's to get down to the 53, tbh.

as long as Gurley is healthy, there shouldnt be an issue depth wise. Tavon and Pharoh Cooper will also likely get reps as RB

Don't forget about our new Ass Kicking FB Sam Rogers.

Fresh... and ready to plow the shit out of defenders.

Which one of our undrafted, low production backups do you think is high quality?

good points I didn't really think about Rogers or Tavon.

I like seeing Tavon used as a slot back for outside carries, he's actually been really successful with it on his limited opportunities.

And Rogers is probably a solution to a lot of the things I had in mind, I totally spaced on him.

Benny C took the backup and 3rd down reps so now it's Brown's turn to take back up reps. Third downs should go to TG and Dunbar. Rodgers could get some plays in the backfield and Tavon too. Hard to find a Benny C but McVay went with Dunbar who is better in the passing game.

Man, they have 1000 yard rushers walking around on the street....For one year....they could use Ray Rice....

No thank you, out of the league 3 years now. The last season he played he sucked bad, yes worse than Gurley last year. Last thing we need is a 30 year old out of the game 3 years with his off field past.

If all you do is judge based on draft status, you would be concerned. I've seen enough of Dunbar in his years with Dallas to feel fine with him as a backup. I've also seen enough of Malcolm Brown, to know that if an injury happened to Dunbar, he would be the new backup. There are always decent running backs available, even if we had multiple injuries. It's one of the easier positions to play in the NFL.

What's happening with;
* Aaron Green
* Zach Laskey
* DeMard Llorens
* And Leonard Tillery
are they not still on the 90 man Roster!? We could stash a RB or two on the PS!

Brown looks ok when he gets chances usually, but, he fumbles.
Rogers probably makes him expendable.
Gurley obviously the 1. Dunbar the third down/change of pace guy and Rogers is the donut all guy. Has size for a power guy, can catch the ball and can play in two back sets. I there is a fourth after those three they are just a roster filler ST guy.

Brown's a player. Go back and watch his TD catch in the preseason. Spinning 1-handed grab, not too shabby.

Nothing exciting about our proven backups so how about this:

Matt Jones is skipping the Redskins OTA's and apparently Gruden isnt to happy. Jones was relegated to backup to Robert Kelley last year after return from injury. They drafted Samaje Perine and he seems to be their new #1 back. McVay knows Jones. What about 6th or 7th rounder for him? Would be a good backup to Gurley. More experienced than anything else we have as backup right now. Just a thought.

Pretty sure our gameplan is utilize Gurley on all 3 downs if he has the hot-hand. Playing out of rhythm on certain drives would warrant giving Dunbar and other halfbacks reps, especially on 3rd down.
