Before the Buffalo Bills used a second-round pick on safety Jairus Byrd in the 2009 NFL draft, many St. Louis Rams fans wanted to see their favorite team draft him.

Byrd was a top safety prospect, a position where the Rams had been searching for help for a long time and a local product, having played his high school ball at Clayton High just outside St. Louis. Alas, the Bills drafted Byrd and he has become one of the top safeties in the league the past six seasons.

Now, many Rams fans are clamoring for Byrd to come back to St. Louis and fit the bill (pun unmercifully intended) as the much-needed rangy safety with big time ball skills to fortify a shaky secondary.

Teams have until late Monday afternoon to put the franchise tag on players they want to keep off the free agent market. Buffalo has been embroiled in discussions with Byrd for the past month or so in an effort to re-sign him long term. But reports surfaced Sunday that the two sides have not reached an agreement.

Buffalo could still tag Byrd again and keep him from hitting free agency and that answer will become clear soon enough.

There's no doubt that Byrd would be a great fit for the Rams and fill a huge need but it seems unlikely the team will spend the kind of money necessary to make that move on Byrd or any safety. If they did want to get in on the bidding, the competition figures to be fierce.
