In the NFL, there is a direct correlation between stability at the quarterback position and winning. Below, a look at every quarterback who has started at least three games for a team the past decade, along with the team’s record, including the postseason, in that time (2005-present). Eli Manning is the only quarterback who has started every game for his team in that time — he and Ben Roethlisberger have proved the value in sticking with a passer. Indianapolis cycled through three quarterbacks in one season, but otherwise, the Colts have had Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck under center the whole time.

ONE QUARTERBACK

New York Giants (98-73, two titles): Eli Manning

Pittsburgh Steelers (110-63, two titles): Ben Roethlisberger

TWO QUARTERBACKS

New England Patriots (134-46, two titles): Tom Brady, Matt Cassel

New Orleans Saints (96-74, one title): Aaron Brooks, Drew Brees

San Diego Chargers (101-68); Drew Brees, Philip Rivers

THREE QUARTERBACKS

Baltimore Ravens (106-70, one title): Steve McNair, Kyle Boller, Joe Flacco

Holy crap! Take out Bulger, and we've actually had zero real quarterbacks! (sorry Sam, it wasn't meant to be...)

We ARE a tolerant bunch

It's the hardest piece to fill. Some teams go many many years looking for a franchise QB.

We are in a drought, but some teams are in the middle of the desert... Cleveland, Houston, etc.

Early reports, seemingly backed up by Coach Fisher's comments, sounds like Mannion is getting a good start. Maybe we get lucky for once, that would be nice, and unexpected.

this is a chicken & egg scenario...do we go through so many QBs because they're terrible...Or, are we terrible cause we go through so many QBs due to injuries....well that's not chicken and egg...but you get what I'm saying....

Correct me, but four (Bulger, Fitzpatrick, Null and Bradford) were drafted, Austin was undrafted, and the rest were FA signings. IMO, many bad decisions which set this team back at least 10 years. I thought SB was going to be the answer but it wasn't meant to be. Here is to Foles being here for a long, long time.

Also consider the importance of not changing coaching staffs every three years or so. This will be Tom Coughlin's 11th season with the Giants. The Steelers have had two head coaches since Chuck Noll retired in 92, Cowher and Tomlin. This will be Belichick's 15th season with the Patriots.

Meanwhile the Rams have had six head coaches since Dick Vermeil bailed out; Martz, Vitt, Linehan, Haslett, Spags, and Fisher. Am too lazy to look up how many coordinators we've shuffled through in that time. There's something to be said for continuity at all levels of a successful team.

Tell me about it! Our best QB in the 70's was a past-his-prime John Hadl. If we had a decent (Foles type) QB to go with a defense that was statically better than the "Purple People Eaters", 'Domesday" and the "Steel Curtain", we'd have a couple more Lombardi Trophy's on the mantle.

Sorry Bro! I have to disagree:

* Roman Gabriel - Play QB in 1970-71-72
and he was 23-16-3 in that time frame.

* James Harris - Was Our QB in 1974-75-76 and he had a record of 42-9-1 in that period.
While-
* Hadl - Only QB'd the Rams in 1973. Although he did have a record of 12-2

I'd take Harris or Gabriel over Hadl in a New York Minute! JMHO:shades:

Gabriel, maybe, but not in the 70's...

Harris, no way. He was the benefactor of a truly great team in every way except QB.

Sorry Dave, but if W/L record is the stat we're using, you could also argue that
Dieter Brock was our best QB in the 80's... ;)

Some of us were on the Mannion train before the pick was made.

As for the OP - you look at some teams QB woes and they were throwing darts at the position. Our woes were clearly injury based. Poor planning can be debated - but it seemed to me to just be our luck.

I believe continuity with at the quarterback position and with the front office and coaches are the most important. As already mentioned in this thread with examples. Teams that can't get that continuity simply won't have any sort of sustained success.
