Wait. What does my phone have to do with it?

Totally confused
Chromecast is a casting device making it less stand alone and more reliant on other technology.
Roku and Apple TV are streaming devices.
Firestick is also a streaming device and android based. It does not offer Kodi natively but you can sideload it.
Once you have kodi your world is open to all kinds of media and free. ..

Don't have the Firestick, but I've got the first-generation Fire TV set-top box. It costs more than the Firestick (still under $100 though), but it's got a helluva lot of processing power. It has a dedicated remote, plus you can also control it from your Fire tablet (you said you had one of those, right?)

Love it!

I would definitely recommend the Firestick + Kodi combo that @rdlkgliders suggested.
I don't have a Firestick myself but I do have a full-on Home Theatre PC running Kodi.
Me and the fiancee are movie lovers so I use the HTPC in conjunction with a 20 TB file server for movies.

What is your build of choice? I have been using Spinz and Black Box lately.
I may try something a little more lightweight just for fun.

HTPC build?
I've been using a custom pc in a small form factor case. Haswell i3, 8GB ram, 120GB SSD.
Kodi launches in a shell and exits to Windows 10.
Nothing lightweight here! Lol, I also use it to run emulators and such. May be upgrading it to an i5 and may be adding a video card. Still debating.
For the server, it's also a custom 8 bay system running unRaid.

Oh and I don't use the video add-ons too much.
The only ones I have are SportsDevil, Genesis, Phoenix, Channel Pear and 1Channel.
I had honestly never heard of the Spinz or Black Box builds.
I like the simplicity of the standard Kodi and I customize as I see fit.

Don't be intimidated the Firestick/Kodi combo is quite easy with basic skills. You can do it Rhody and you won't be sorry. you will say goodbye to cable if that is your goal.
The setup @TXRams86 is running is more advanced and takes a bit of familiarity.
@TXRams86 Are you considering a CPU upgrade and SSD because you are having performance issues? your custom build with those Repo's should be pretty snappy fast, Nice setup. I allocate a Samsung galaxy tab pro as my media center. I want to do a dedicated Media center build in the near future. The firesticks perform quite well, I have set up a couple and run one in a spare room at home.

i'm currently running the 120gb ssd and it is really fast.
i had never ran an ssd prior to building the htpc and now I run one in my desktop and laptop (250 and 500gb respectively).
hands down the best uprade to speed up a pc in my opinion.
i'm booting into kodi (and windows) from cold start in about 10 seconds.

since i have an ssd already, the only parts i'm considering upgrading are the processor and adding a video card.
definitely not necessary but the extra cpu power and video card would allow me to run more advanced emulators (ps2, ps3, xbox, etc).
but that's just going wild. the current setup will suffice until 4k becomes standard.

and speaking on kodi itself...
i'm running isengard with the artic zephyr skin..absolutely beautiful.
i've created some custom playlists for the lady and kiddos.
kids can access their disney flicks right off the menu and the lady can get to her chick flicks.
me? i have all my favorites in the "favorites" menu, lol.

this is definitely a system made for more advanced users.
the firestick + kodi combo should suffice for most.
there is just so much more you can do with a standalone pc/laptop in conjunction with kodi.

Bump.

I have an old roku, but stopped using it years ago when I cancelled my Netflix service.

I've been reading a little about these newer streaming boxes. Some "fully loaded"
Mxq, Fire TV and NextD.

I may be wrong, but it appears that the fully loaded boxes some people are selling, just have apps and add-ons loaded that can be loaded yourself.
I'd like to know if there's more to it them that.

Also. I have Amazon Prime.
Are there benefits to going with Fire TV or can I get the same add-ons and apps on other devices.

Just loaded Kodi on my pc last night to get an idea of the add on and content. It didn't take long to find some decent products.

My experience in this is only a few hours now and would like to dig deeper.

I am enjoying the Firestick

With the buld that I have it seems I have to update it every week or so... but even without Kodi and other add-ons I like it
