@nwagoner: A little practice squad shuffling: Rams released safety Matt Daniels and brought TE Brad Smelley back to the mix.

The practice squad is not our minor league system - these are guys that can be snatched up by any team any time the same as guys that are on the street - it is designed to get our 53 ready to play. This isn't a talent evaluation between Daniels and Smelley - it's a "what do they need at practice to prepare for the Vikings" thing.

Yes they do provide that, but the design is to have a pool of players that are adept in your system to draw from in case of need due to injuries. They provide depth at the positions where the need has been identified by the staff.
If you have to pull someone from another teams squad it's kind of a penalty as that player will have to be active for 3 games. ..You can bring one of your own PS players up onto the 53, and place him back on the PS with no restrictions. ..The reason is because the league wanted to prevent teams from grabbing future opponents players to steal their play books/ schemes...It's also for the purpose of developing young talent from within your own system....It's not a one trick pony.

• The Rams have made a change on the practice squad, waiving safety Matt Daniels and adding tight end Brad Smelley. Daniels, a third-year pro from Duke, had both his 2012 and 2013 seasons ended by injuries and was slowed in camp with a concussion. Smelley, an Alabama product, was with the Rams for just a few days last year and was added to the camp roster on Aug. 11. He had four catches for 46 yards during the preseason.

he always seemed to have a nose for the ball
