I'm interested in running a twisted variation of a pick 'em contest for the last 7 or 8 weeks, if I can get at least 8 people involved. I'm interested in the psychology aspect of decision making. I've tried this before with pretty awful results so I won't post the weekly results until after the competition is finished. (This is so I can tell those who aren't doing well that everyone else is doing badly and they still have every chance of finishing in the top 3 ;)).

The game is 22-Handicap. Essentially it's a straight pick 'em where you just pick the team you think will each particular game. The twist is in the scoring. Each incorrect pick will score 0. Each correct pick will score 22 points + or - the handicap listed on ESPN's Pigskin Pick 'em game. All ½ points will be rounded down. Thus a winning 2½ point favourite would score 19 points whilst a winning 2½ point underdog would score 24 points. My main interest is how much the scoring system will influence decision-making.

Thursday games will be excluded, mostly because people forget to make picks before Thursdays and then they don't want to play because they think they're miles behind everyone else. Games where the handicap is more than 19 points will also be excluded since there is little or no point in picking the favoured team.

If helpful i'll post a list each Tuesday or Wednesday of what the handicaps are and thus what the potential winning points for each team will be. Selections will need to be made by pm and be before each game starts. (At a push i'd accept 2 or 3 minutes into a scoreless game). No changing your picks! Post in this thread if you're up for the challenge. I know there aren't many people interested in starting a pick 'em this late in the season. If you do start with this game PLEASE see it through even if you don't think you're doing very well.

    Thanks for reading …

    -Bernie

(Oh freak! Ignore that last bit) :D

Thanks, but it doesn't look like there's much interest. It's a shame because I would have found the decisions and strategies very interesting.

If you'd like to give it a go i'll post the ESPN handicaps and scoring values for this week as a trial. Just a general heads-up, i'm going to change the scoring to alter the base scoring point from 22 to 18. This is because the original scoring generally favoured the favourites. The scoring modification should make underdogs more appealing.

    ESPN handicaps:
    Bears +7½ @ Rams -7½
    Browns +4½ @ Steelers -4½
    Cowboys +1½ @Buccaneers -1½
    Lions +11½ @ Packers -11½
    Panthers -4½ @ Titans +4½
    Dolphins +6½ @ Eagles -6½
    Saints -½ @ Redskins +½
    Jaguars +5½ @ Ravens -5½
    Vikings +2½ @ Raiders -2½
    Chiefs +6½ @ Broncos -6½
    Patriots -7½ @ Giants +7½
    Cardinals +3½ @ Seahawks -3½
    Texans +10½ @ Bengals -10½

    Your points value Choices:
    Bears 25 or Rams 10
    Browns 22 or Steelers 13
    Cowboys 19 or Buccaneers 16
    Lions 29 or Packers 6
    Panthers 13 or Titans 22
    Dolphins 24 or Eagles 11
    Saints 17 or Redskins 18
    Jaguars 23 or Ravens 12
    Vikings 20 or Raiders 15
    Chiefs 24 or Broncos 11
    Patriots 10 or Giants 25
    Cardinals 21 or Seahawks 14
    Texans 28 or Bengals 7

This weeks trial is open to all. Good luck to anyone trying their hand. Anyone who scores more than 60% of the maximum possible points is doing extremely well.

My interest is what people choose when it isn't just 1 point for picking the winning team. In a straight pick'em you'd get 1 point for the Texans if they win or 1 point for the Bengals if they win. There's no incentive to pick a big underdog such as Texans this week if there's no scoring differential. In this game you'd score 28 points if you pick the Texans and they win or 7 points if you pick the Bengals and they win. You'd still score 0 if you're wrong. The objective is to make the decisions more challenging. I'm interested to see if there's a point where people switch from favourites to underdog. Game strategy has always interested me.
Feel free to pick the winners of the 13 games.

I'm not involved with the Sportsbook. It's time consuming for the amount of interest it generates. Betting lines can change considerably during the week and personally I wouldn't want to monitor them for changes twice a day. Sundays games are generally up a day or so before they start. I'm happy to supply what answers I can to gambling related questions but I can't commit to running the Sportsbook the way I would want it run and I haven't always agreed with the way others run it. I'd rather support others for their effort and keep my criticisms to myself.

    That's it!
You just pick the winners - no spread. The spread is listed just so you know why differing teams will score you different amounts of points. A Rams win would score you 10 points. A Bears win would score you 25 points.

sorry for my having a life outside of this place. Planned on putting the games up last night, but was invited to a wine and beer tasting event with some friends.

Wine and beer always wins against over/under lines (y)
