Rams Add Help to ST and RB Position
Deep amidst the rumors of Larry Johnson heading to St Louis, Billy Devaney and the Rams offered up a change-up by signing running back Chauncey Washington off the New York Jets’ practice squad. “He’s a strong runner with good speed and a little bit of a juke to him,” Rams general manager Billy Devaney said. “He’s also got good hands and is a good pass protector, and can play special teams.”
Washington, 25, was part of a USC team that included Reggie Bush and LenDale White, but injuries and academic problems hampered his development and slowed his career in Southern California. Though, he did lead USC in rushing in both the 2006 and ’07 seasons, with 744 yards (in 2006) and 969 yards (in 2007). Washington was a seventh-round draft pick by Jacksonville in ’08, playing just six games for the Jaguars – mainly on special teams.
Washington was praised by Rex Ryan on the HBO series, “Hard Knocks” this off season. Washington is known as a hard-hitting special teams player and a tough runner who will likely fill the void left by the injured Dominique Curry. Curry will have season ending ACL surgery after being placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday.
Washington can likely contribute right away on special teams and will provide insurance in the backfield, as the status of Steven Jackson (groin) and Keith Toston (shoulder) is uncertain for Sunday’s home game against Seattle.
